Position Title Assistant Professor of Instruction – Special Education Location San Marcos, Texas Department The Department of Curriculum and Instruction, College of Education, Texas State University Position Description The Department of Curriculum and Instruction at Texas State University invites applications for an open position as an Assistant Professor of Instruction in Special Education. This is a non‑tenure, nine‑month faculty of instruction position with a renewable one‑year contract subject to a positive annual review. The position is located at the San Marcos Campus, 30 miles south of Austin and 45 miles north of San Antonio. Applicants with expertise in inclusive special education practices (least restrictive environment, free and appropriate public education), emotional/behavioural disabilities, and multi‑tiered systems of academic and behavioural supports are encouraged to apply. Responsibilities and Expectations Teach four courses per semester in the special education graduate and undergraduate programs (fall and spring). Optional summer teaching available based on student need. Attend special education program and departmental meetings. Demonstrate teaching effectiveness and quality through evidence of student learning, research‑based instructional practices, and ongoing professional development. Provide leadership to the program (e.g., program coordinator, residency support, advising, supervision of clinical experience). Participate in service to the department, college, university, and professional community. Exhibit a collegial attitude that supports the collaborative culture of the Special Education program, Department of Curriculum and Instruction, and College of Education. Required Qualifications Earned doctorate degree in Special Education or related field from an accredited institution by the hire date. Three or more years of full‑time teaching experience in special education within pre‑K‑12 school settings. Proven record of effective teaching (e.g., positive teaching evaluations) in person and online in U.S. colleges and/or university settings. Expertise in teaching EC‑12 students with Emotional and Behavioral Disabilities, Learning Disabilities, and/or Intellectual/Neurodevelopmental Disabilities. Experience facilitating courses focused on implementing multi‑tiered systems of support, response to intervention, and positive behavior intervention and supports. Record of leadership and service at the department, college, university, and/or professional level. Demonstrated proficiency in verbal and written English communication. Preferred Qualifications Experience with university systems, including SAP, Slate, Watermark, Canvas, scheduling systems, and Curriculum Management Systems. Evidence of online course creation and instruction within accelerated online programs. Specialized professional credentials in behavior analysis (e.g., Board Certified Behavior Analyst), structured literacy (e.g., Certified Academic Language Therapist), or related areas. Special Education teacher certification.
