Under the direction of the Administrative Nurse III, the phlebotomist screens patients who present for phlebotomy services to determine the need for any special instructions. The phlebotomist is responsible for entering and verifying patient demographic data, collecting specimens, ordering lab tests, generating lists, and labeling specimens for facility analysis. Duties & Responsibilities Greet patients and perform phlebotomy on patients of all ages. Prepare instruments and/or area according to procedure specifications; maintain and clean instruments and/or areas. Maintain specimen integrity using aseptic technique; obtain blood specimens by performing venipunctures and finger sticks. Review and process procedure orders; document and communicate incomplete or invalid procedures. Screen patients prior to a procedure; explain components of procedures to patients. Conduct procedures; determine the best location for specimen acquisition. Observe and monitor patients throughout procedures; advise of any abnormal indicators. Collect, prepare, and/or transport specimens for processing. Order supplies as needed. Evaluate completeness of specimens/specimen requests; perform manual computer procedures for test requesting and canceling tests as needed. Maintain current knowledge of and adhere to all government, industry, or institutional regulatory guidelines. Perform support duties such as answering phones, assisting with inventory and records management. Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent. One year of work experience as a phlebotomist within the last five years. Possession of a current/valid American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support CPR Certification. Preferred Qualifications Knowledge of special handling of specimens required for most laboratory tests. Experience with patients ranging from infants to adults. Ability to learn aseptic technique as applied to assist technicians with patients. Skill to perform phlebotomy, including micro‑collection techniques. Understanding of age‑specific psychosocial needs of patients in phlebotomy. Ability to obtain parent cooperation when drawing a child or assess need for special kindness when drawing a compromised adult. Ability to learn non‑verbal cues in communicating and interacting with patients of all ages, exhibiting kindness and a caring attitude. Basic first aid skills, good communication skills, and a professional attitude. Proficiency in operating equipment in the work area, including mechanical transport devices, computer terminals, centrifuges, telephones, and filing systems. Good organizational skills.
