Ultrasound (Echo) Sonographer - Per Diem

POSITION SUMMARY:

Performs Adult & Neonatal (cross-trained) Transthoracic Echocardiogram (TTE) and Transesophageal Echocardiogram (TEE) examinations in compliance with protocols, and techniques, as outlined in Guidelines and Standards in the American Society of Echocardiography (ASE) and Scope of Practice and Clinical Standards for the Diagnostic Medical Sonographer in the Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (SDMS).

RESPONSIBILITES:

• Echo-ultrasound sonographers must have ARDMS (American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography) registration in both RDCS (Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer) and RVT (Registered Vascular Technologist) by the end of the probationary period.
• By the end of their probationary period, newly hired sonographers must be in an IV insertion/administration education course (ASE/SDMS approved course or by SBSH Nursing Education Department) with continued early IV education competency by Nursing Education Department or by a SBSH/SBUH Provider (ie CCU-NP). Must follow the ASE/SDMS standards by receiving education/training on the proper technique for intravenous line insertion and administration of UEA (Ultrasound Enhancing Agent). • All echo sonographers newly hired must be willing to be cross-trained in Neonatal Cardiology and Vascular ultrasound procedures.
• Obtain diagnostic recordings of cardiac ultrasound images (2D/3D/4D), Strain, and Doppler hemodynamic data. The technique is extremely operator-dependent, and its optimal performance requires a highly skilled and well-educated person who can continuously integrate known clinical information, ultrasound image content, and related physiologic data to tailor the examination to ensure that it is comprehensive and accurate. Continuous applications of the principles of ultrasound physics and instrumentation during the examination are requisite to obtain optimal data. Accordingly, the echo sonographer must assume responsibility for the examination and therefore must exercise independent judgement, apply knowledge of clinical cardiology, and use problem-solving skills. The echo sonographer must possess sophisticated cognitive skills and be proficient in the use of sonographic techniques to produce accurate and appropriate anatomic and physiologic information for the physician to review for diagnostic interpretation. The Echo sonographer is required to have a detailed understanding of cardiac and thoracic anatomy, physiology, tomographic anatomy, pathophysiology, embryology, and hemodynamics. The sonographer must be able to recognize abnormalities.
• Echo sonographer must obtain pertinent clinical information from the patient, referring physician and patient's record.
• Must be skilled in interacting with patients, which includes explaining the procedure to the patient, but not discussing the clinical findings of the examination.
• Must be able to prepare preliminary report commenting on chamber sizes, wall thickness, wall motion, ejection fraction, valve morphology and function, Doppler findings (hemodynamics)., mitral inflow, pericardial or pleural effusions, masses, thrombus, other (i.e. 3D/4D, Strain).
• Transferes data into Syngo Dynamics & VascuBase (pending IT build) for physician interpretation. Clearing ECG patient demographics in MUSE and perform any ECGs needed.
• Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental and infection control standards. Prepares written & digital documentation as required by the profession and the department, such as evaluation results, individualized treatment plans, progress reports, statistical data, and other such reports.
• Prepares the patient, explains the procedure, and ensures the patient's cooperation during examinations. Abstracts relevant information from the patient's clinical record and obtains additional information if necessary. Monitors other variables; i.e., patient condition, change in mental and physical status, etc.
• Calibrates and adjusts the testing equipment in accordance with standard procedures.
• Maintains records of examinations, data and other pertinent information on patients.
• Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings, and workshops. Attends meetings as required. Performs other related duties as assigned or requested (i.e. training new hires & students). Must be able to troubleshoot and take a creative approach to problem-solving.
• Initiates, conducts, and modifies Echocardiographic techniques in an emergency setting for adults and/or children. Initiates, conducts, and modifies Echocardiographic techniques in an emergency setting, in newborns, in the immediate post-deliver and neonatal settings.
• Float to all off sites as needed.
• Call/On-Call/Recall required.

• Holidays and Weekends as required.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:

• Completion of SDMS or ASE recognized program
• Two years experience in Cardiac Ultrasound preferred.
• ARDMS board certification within one year of hire.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

• Works next to very ill and sometimes contagious patients.
• Frequent major infection hazards.
• There will be exposure to blood-borne pathogens that will require proper use of personal protective equipment as needed, e.g., eye, face, gown, lab coat, mask, and medical gloves.

As part of employment at Southampton Hospital, there may be occasions when travel to other locations is needed to support operational needs.

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established based on relevant experience.
