Youth Camp Program Specialist

Date: Jul 6, 2026 Location: AUSTIN, TX Position Details Job Title: Sanitarian III (Youth Camp Program Specialist) Agency: Dept of State Health Services Department: Environmental Posting Number: 18697 Closing Date: 07/20/2026 Shift: Day Telework: Eligible Travel: Up to 55% Employment Type: Full time, Regular, Non-exempt Brief Job Description Execute senior‑level environmental sanitation tasks for youth camp and public health sanitation programs under the supervision of the Youth Camp & Public Sanitation Coordinator and the Environmental Hazards and Public Sanitation Branch Manager. Serve as liaison to the Youth Camp Advisory Board, develop program policies, provide training, conduct joint inspections, and manage enforcement cases. Oversee rule revision projects, legislative cost analyses, and support emergency response activities. Essential Job Functions 30% Perform advanced environmental sanitation work for youth camps, oversee inspections, and develop standard operating procedures. 30% Review and approve camp applications, assign inspections, and prepare enforcement cases. 15% Manage sexual abuse and child molestation awareness training programs, process complaints, and coordinate investigations. 10% Lead rule‑revision projects and legislative cost analyses in coordination with stakeholders and legal counsel. 10% Provide backup support for public swimming pool and spa regulations. 5% Perform additional duties, including emergency response training. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Comprehension of state and federal statutes affecting youth camps and public health sanitation. Understanding of environmental sanitation principles and public health laws. Familiarity with legislative procedures and agency rule‑making processes. Skill in interpreting statutes, reviewing inspection reports, and making sound decisions. Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and regulatory software. Ability to manage multiple priorities, communicate complex information, and work independently. Registrations, Licensure, or Certifications Must be registered as a professional sanitarian by the State of Texas. Initial Screening Criteria Bachelor’s degree in natural science or related field. Current registration as a Professional Sanitarian in Texas. Minimum of three years full‑time experience conducting inspections in environmental sanitation. Preferred Qualifications Two or more years of full‑time experience in public speaking and meetings. Two or more years of experience interpreting laws and providing guidance to industry or public health departments.
