Job Posting Information Title: JR101602 Univ Police Officer IV (INTERNAL APPLICANTS ONLY) (Open) Department: Police Department, PM Position Type: Regular Open Date: 05-15-2026 Close Date: $80,000-$85,952 Job Description: Under general supervision, functions as a supervisor of a shift and/or complex specialized unit. Responsibilities Inspects police officers and security guards. Performs supervisory duties, such as assigning specific patrol responsibilities, establishing priorities and evaluating work performance; instructs, directs and guides the personnel on a patrol shift. Conducts investigations and prepares detailed computer-generated and verbal reports on a variety of incidents including, but not limited to, criminal offenses, traffic accidents, and personal injuries and missing persons. Carefully observes the activities and capabilities of personnel under their supervision to ascertain whether or not police duties are promptly and efficiently performed. They report in writing to their superior officer cases of misconduct, incompetence, neglect of duty or violations of the rules, regulations. Patrols campus to deter and detect criminal activity, identify hazards. At the end of the tour-of-duty, the shift supervisor shall confer with the incoming supervisor. Enforces all University rules, regulations and State laws. A Sergeant/Shift Supervisor evaluates subordinates and encourages personnel to achieve maximum levels of efficiency. A Sergeant/Shift Supervisor relays orders to subordinates and passes information up the chain-of-command to his/her superiors. A Sergeant/Shift Supervisor is accountable for the accuracy, legibility and thoroughness of all reports submitted by their subordinates. A Sergeant/Shift Supervisor is assigned specialized program assignments and is responsible for program development and the training of police, staff and students about various campus safety programs. A Sergeant/Shift Supervisor conducts required daily roll calls and inspection of their shift. A Sergeant/Shift Supervisor performs all other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications High School Diploma or GED; A.A. desirable. Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience. Two or more years law enforcement experience. Highly Desirable: Training Certifications in Defensive Tactics, Firearms, Investigations by the Maryland Police Training Commission in Defensive Tactics. Thorough knowledge of citizens rights and responsibilities; of federal, state, and local laws and ordinances. Skill in detecting situations imperiling public safety; in operating emergency vehicles under all conditions; in the care and use of firearms, self-defense tools and criminal detection devices; in communicating effectively both orally and in writing; in operating two way radios and telephones in a variety of environments; in conducting confidential investigations; in applying knowledge, experience, and reason to arrive at prompt and effective decisions for both routine and critical situations. Ability to show sensitivity in interactions with a diverse population; to maintain composure and demonstrate professionalism and restraint at all times; to perform extensive sitting, driving, standing, walking, climbing, and running; to lift, drag, and carry heavy objects; to establish and maintain effective working relationships; to follow oral and written directions; to provide guidance and training or supervision to others; to respond to situations requiring physical stamina and force; to enter and exit vehicles frequently and quickly; to work in and wear personal protective equipment. Conditions Of Employment Candidates selected for employment may be subject to medical inquiries and/or medical examinations to determine ability to perform the job. Employees in this job class are required to maintain certification as specified by the Maryland Police Training Commission. Employees in this job class may be subject to pre-employment and random drug testing. Certification as a police officer by the Maryland Police Training Commission. Valid Maryland Non-commercial Class C or equivalent driver’s license.
