Antelope Valley Symphony Orchestra Assistant, Professional Expert (Temporary)

Position Overview Under the direction of the Antelope Valley Symphony Orchestra Director, the Antelope Valley Symphony Orchestra (AVSO) Assistant II is hired to rehearse with students at regular class meetings and carry out the aims and objectives of the AVSO in pursuit of artistic excellence. Key Responsibilities Under the instructor’s supervision, demonstrate correct performance of musical passages. Rehearse and perform music alongside student musicians. Provide musical and technical leadership within an orchestral section of instruments. Organize assigned orchestral music. Practice assigned music. Bring music and instrument to rehearsals and performances. Other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Education and Experience Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent. Minimum of one (1) year experience playing at a professional performance level. Other Requirements An audition will be required. Travel may be required. Knowledge and Abilities Music terminology. Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy. Orchestra rehearsal practices. Diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of community college students. Perform advanced orchestral music at a professional level, as determined by audition. Understand and follow oral and written directions, as well as physical conducting gestures. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Meet schedules and timelines. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others. Work congenially and cooperatively with student musicians. Acquire and wear assigned concert attire to performances. Physical Effort & Working Conditions Requires the ability to exert some physical effort, such as walking, standing, climbing stairs, talking, hearing, bending and light lifting/dragging/carrying approximately 20 pounds. The noise level is usually low to moderate, but consistent. Extended periods of time sitting in ensemble formation and playing an instrument. Work is usually performed indoors. May be required to travel. Work schedule varies. Compensation & Employment Details Short Term Hourly (Temporary) Employees and Professional Experts: May work up to 25 hours a week (not to exceed 100 hours per month), total not to exceed 999 hours for a total of 100 days. (Days are counted regardless of the number of hours worked per day).
