Mortgage Originator

Overview Primarily responsible for working with customers interested in identifying and obtaining permanent FHA/VA and conventional mortgage loans and other residential mortgage programs that best meet the customer’s financial needs and objectives, while adhering to the requirements of federal registration under the SAFE Act. Responsibilities Interview applicants to collect and analyze information regarding income, assets, debts and credit data. Assess applicants’ credit worthiness and obtain relevant financial and credit data. Issue pre‑qualification statements of borrowers’ eligibility. Determine which mortgage products best meet the customer’s needs and financial circumstances and advise on advantages and disadvantages. Make recommendations regarding other bank products or alternative lending vehicles, as needed. Cultivate new mortgage business through solicitation of residential first mortgages via contacts with Realtors, builders, and developers. Travel to prospective customers’ homes or business locations and follow‑up via travel or telephone as required. Negotiate terms and conditions of loans with mortgagors and bind the bank as authorized. Ensure lending compliance with all origination procedures, bank policies, and regulatory requirements. Advise management on effective compliance strategies and recommend modifications to corporate operating policies. Monitor local real‑estate market trends, regulatory changes, and industry developments. Represent the bank in the community, conduct seminars for the general public and real‑estate agents, and promote additional business and community outreach. Work independently and under limited supervision, maintaining extensive external and internal contacts. Qualifications Associate’s degree and 2 years of sales experience, or a combined minimum of 4 years of higher education and/or relevant work experience, including at least 2 years sales experience. Thorough knowledge of FHA/VA regulations, conventional loan requirements, and real‑estate law. General knowledge of personal computers and software used in the Residential Mortgage Department. Proven sales ability, strong mathematical skills, self‑motivation, and excellent oral and written communication. Ability to interact professionally with individuals at all income levels. Demonstrated independence, attention to detail, and ability to work under critical time constraints. Compensation Commission based; a draw will be advanced. The successful candidate’s particular combination of knowledge, skills, and experience will inform specific compensation. Location Bridgeport, Connecticut, United States of America.
