Public Safety Dispatcher I

Overview Under immediate or general supervision, receive incoming calls for police assistance and dispatch necessary units; perform a variety of general support duties related to communication activities, including record keeping, typing, and filing; monitor alarm systems and teletype communications; learn applicable policies, procedures, and work methods associated with assigned duties; and perform related duties as assigned. Classification Summary This is the entry level classification in the Public Safety Dispatcher series. Incumbents of this classification are trained in department policies, procedures and systems by higher level communications staff. Generally, work is observed and reviewed both during performance and upon completion. This classification is distinguished from the next higher level classification of Public Safety DispatcherII by the performance of work requiring a lesser degree of police dispatch knowledge and judgment. Supervision Immediate supervision is provided by the Communications Supervisor or designee. Technical or functional supervision is provided by Senior Public Safety Dispatchers or designee. No supervision is exercised. Essential Functions Receives emergency calls from the public for police, or other emergency services, evaluates information to determine location of the emergency and the appropriate personnel and equipment needed to respond. Dispatches emergency units on the computer aided dispatch system (CAD) as necessary per established procedures. Maintains contact with all units on assignment to determine status and location. Communicates with callers to determine continuing disposition of calls, provide assistance and explain response procedures. Receives 9-1-1 emergency calls and major emergency and public disaster calls. Contacts County and emergency management network agencies to provide information and coordinate call responses. Learns and develops an understanding of applicable policies, procedures, and work methods associated with assigned duties; uses law enforcement terminology and cites codes sections by number. Performs clerical duties as they apply to arrests and entries into the California Law Enforcement Telecommunications System. Qualifications One year of heavy telephone, public contact or dispatch experience. Prior public safety dispatch experience in a municipality is desirable. Completion of the twelfth grade or the equivalent. Possession of Public Safety Dispatcher Basic Course training certificate from an accredited California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) agency within one (1) year of employment. Possession of a Basic POST Public Safety Dispatcher’s certificate within one (1) year of employment.
