The Deputy Sheriff is responsible for the supervision, protection, care, custody and control or investigation of incarcerated inmates and other detainees. This class works under general supervision and requires considerable judgment, initiative, and skill in a variety of situations. The jobholder must accept the responsibility to support and promote the organization's mission and comply with its directives. Personal conduct and behavior (on duty as well as off duty) must be such that it does not bring disrepute or unnecessarily endanger the public's trust or confidence in the agency or its members. Essential Functions Maintain security and accountability for tools, equipment, and facility keys. Record and document all required information pertaining to logs including but not limited to housing, 15 minute watch, single cell restriction, restraint, and confinement logs. Provide direct supervision and documentation of inmates and their movement within the housing areas of the facility and secure perimeter, including verifying accurate identification and counts. Provide direct supervision and documentation of inmates and their movement while transporting, including verifying accurate identification and counts. Control, subdue, and restrain inmates by the use of proper restraining hold or device without causing undue pain or injury. Respond in a timely manner to inmate requests for medical treatment and monitor the health and welfare of all inmates as assigned. Render emergency first aid as required. Inspect conditions of locks, window bars, grills, doors, and gates at correctional facilities to ensure security and help prevent escapes. Respond to an escape or attempted escape by sealing off potential escape routes and use the minimum amount of force required to stop the escapee(s) while maintaining control and custody of other inmates. Sound the alarm and report escape or attempted escape as soon as possible to the control room. Break up fights among inmates and restrain disorderly inmates. Use appropriate self‑defense tactics to deflect assault by inmates. Drive passenger vehicles and trucks used to transport inmates to other institutions, courtrooms, hospitals, and work sites. Requires the ability to see, hear, and speak. Incumbent must be able to defend themselves, defend others, or otherwise gain control of a physically resistant inmate. Work Environment The Deputy Sheriff position is expected to work varied, eight‑hour shifts, many of which include nighttime and weekend work. Work is performed in a controlled and occasionally high‑stress environment. During natural disasters, major accident scenes, or major crime scenes, the jobholder may be required to be on scene to assist in any way with both Sheriff's Office personnel and victims. The type and amount of assistance will be at the discretion of the officer in charge at the scene. Removal Removal can be with or without fault of the jobholder or the agency. Appointment is at the will of the Sheriff. Economic conditions that cause reductions in workforce, the member's inability to attend regularly to work, chronic illness, and a failure to perform competently on any of the critical tasks of the position or a consistent failure to perform competently on regular tasks are among the major reasons for job removal without fault. Failure to support the agency's mission, uphold the oath of office, behave in a manner that supports the Sheriff's Office Code of Conduct, continually comply with preconditions of original employment, or to display due regard for the civil liberties of any persons, will lead to removal with or without fault. In addition, accruing atypical amounts of dysfunctional work time or requiring atypical amounts of supervisory counseling or remedial training will lead to removal with or without fault.
