Laboratory Technician - Dept. of Undergraduate Medical Education Wayne State University is searching for an experienced Laboratory Technician to support teaching laboratories at its Detroit campus location. Essential Functions Perform routine laboratory tasks to ensure proper preparation, set‑up and maintenance of laboratory supplies, equipment, experimental tests and procedures in a teaching laboratory. Set‑up and review experimental tests and procedures used in a teaching laboratory; prepare chemical solutions, media, reagents and samples, such as stained hematology slides for instructional purposes. Assist faculty in the execution of all laboratory tests and procedures. Perform routine laboratory maintenance (replace fuses, bulbs, filters, etc.), wash and sterilize glassware and related experimental equipment, dispose of biohazardous materials, and properly store supplies and equipment. Maintain laboratory equipment and supply inventory; order and restock necessary chemical solvents, reagents, drugs and other experimental supplies; keep accurate records and prepare requisition orders. Assist faculty and students in teaching laboratory procedures; proctor student examinations, distribute notes and technical supplies, evaluate student laboratory performance. Provide training and answer questions regarding basic laboratory skills, procedures and safety. Assist with distribution of parking permits and ID badges. Set up, monitor and clean up medical education learning spaces, student organization training sessions and special events; prepare classrooms, computer labs and MD Labs for instructional activities and examinations. Maintain accurate records related to equipment loans, inventory and supply distribution. Provide basic audiovisual and technology support for classrooms, laboratories and events. Qualifications High school graduate or equivalent combination of education and/or experience. Courswork in biology and/or chemistry with significant exposure to scientific laboratory equipment and techniques; some undergraduate coursework in basic sciences preferred. Knowledge of handling and safety of biohazardous chemicals and reagents. Experience applying methods, techniques and procedures used in a teaching laboratory. Ability to perform procedural work routines and operate specialized scientific equipment. Ability to follow oral and/or written instructions; keen attention to detail to identify and resolve problems. Ability to communicate effectively with others. Prior experience as a Laboratory Aide is typical. Preferred Qualifications Excellent communication skills; dependable, engaged and friendly personality to work in a fast‑paced team‑oriented environment. Basic understanding of computer and printer maintenance and setup. Flexible schedule desired (no weekends). The university welcomes applications from persons with disabilities and veterans.
