About the Role Design Engineer at Ashby combines the responsibilities of a product designer with the technical depth of an engineer. The role is dedicated to building the design system, creating new UI flows, and translating designs into code that serves 100,000+ weekly active users worldwide. Responsibilities Redesign mobile web interfaces by conducting customer research, wireframing new flows, and implementing a refined design system. Build modular, composable components for the design system to enable rapid UI development across products. Improve information hierarchy and visual clarity for complex data views, helping recruiters quickly parse candidate assessments. Collaborate with product engineering to influence data model design, ensuring scalability from both design and engineering perspectives. Iterate on design and code based on user feedback, balancing speed of delivery with high visual quality. Qualifications Strong visual design skills with a portfolio demonstrating polished UI/UX work. Solid programming skills in TypeScript, React, CSS, and optionally backend Node or other technologies. Experience shipping design systems or reusable UI components to large product audiences. Proven ability to ship features to hundreds of users and iterate under fast product cycles. Excellent communication skills, comfortable collaborating with designers, product managers, and engineers. Levels Junior Design Engineer – up to 2 years of industry experience with a portfolio of visual work. Design Engineer (Mid/Senior) – 2+ years of continuous experience as an engineer or designer, with full‑stack proficiency and experience shipping to large user bases. Staff Design Engineer – Demonstrated leadership on design systems and large‑scale product features, with design and engineering contributions that have been directly used by hundreds of users. Interview Process Introduction call with the VP of Engineering. Technical screen or design take‑home assignment. Deep dive into past design system or product work, followed by a final interview.
