Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: Nursing Specialty: Medical Surgical Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12 hour Days Hours per Shift: 12 hours Experience: Minimum 1 year License: Active state license Certifications: BLS required Must-Have: - Post-operative care of patients - Critical thinking skills - Ability to seek help when needed - Good bedside manner - Team player Description: This position involves working in a Surgical Acute unit. The unit has 63 beds, including private and observation beds. The nurse to patient ratio is 4-5 patients per RN during the day and 5-6 patients per RN at night, with the potential for increased ratios during peak times. Common diagnoses include post-operative surgical patients, trauma, and overflow medical cases. Responsibilities include dressing changes, wound care, IV therapy, pain management, and care for drains and NG tubes. RNs are not required to titrate drips, but will manage specific cases such as Heparin. Charge nurses and house supervisors are present on every shift, with charge nurses not assigned any patient load. Patient care technicians assist with various tasks including vitals checks and ADLs. RNs are not responsible for managing respiratory equipment except for basic troubleshooting. Telemetry monitoring is available, but RNs do not read their own strips as this is managed by central staffing. Schedule includes 12-hour shifts from 0700-1930 for days and 1930-0730 for nights. Weekends and holidays are required on a rotating basis. Travelers will float to units with the same level of experience, ensuring they work within their scope. Scrub colors are flexible, allowing for any color to be worn. The position requires completion of designated orientation with an assigned preceptor and education staff.
