This leadership position is responsible for the integrity, security, accuracy, accessibility, and compliance of patient health information while overseeing coding, release of information, data quality initiatives, regulatory compliance, and departmental operations.This role offers the opportunity to work closely with Revenue Cycle, Informatics, Compliance, Quality, Clinical Leadership, and Providers to ensure the highest standards of documentation, coding accuracy, and health information governance throughout the organization.Important Position RequirementThis is an on-site leadership position located in Pagosa Springs, Colorado.The Manager of HIM is expected to maintain a visible leadership presence, collaborate directly with clinical and operational departments, participate in hospital committees, oversee department staff, and support ongoing organizational initiatives. Candidates must be willing to work on-site at Pagosa Springs Medical Center.Position SummaryThe Manager of HIM is responsible for the management and daily operations of the Health Information Management Department, including:Acquisition, analysis, maintenance, and protection of patient medical recordsHealth information privacy and securityMedical coding oversight and complianceRelease of Information (ROI)Data integrity and quality controlRegulatory readiness and accreditation complianceHIM staff leadership and developmentStrategic planning and department growthElectronic health record optimizationUnderstanding and application of reimbursement methodologiesKey ResponsibilitiesLeadership & Department ManagementDirect and oversee daily HIM operationsLead, mentor, coach, and develop HIM staffConduct performance evaluations and performance improvement planningCoordinate recruiting, interviewing, onboarding, and retention effortsFacilitate department meetings and staff communicationPromote a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvementHealth Information ManagementEnsure completeness, accuracy, and integrity of patient medical recordsOversee coding quality and compliance with ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS guidelinesManage release of information processesMonitor documentation quality initiativesAddress medical record amendments and patient information disputesMaintain compliance with HIPAA and applicable privacy lawsDevelop and maintain HIM policies and proceduresRegulatory Compliance & QualityEnsure compliance with federal, state, and accreditation requirementsMaintain survey readinessMonitor data security and privacy practicesInvestigate and respond to quality and compliance concernsParticipate in Performance Improvement, Documentation Improvement, Medical Records, and EHR-related committeesStrategic Planning & TechnologyCollaborate with Informatics and IT on EHR optimization initiativesSupport implementation of new technologies and workflowsDevelop short- and long-term departmental goalsMonitor departmental KPIs and performance metricsPrepare statistical and operational reports for leadership reviewFinancial & Operational ManagementDevelop and manage departmental budgetsMonitor staffing, payroll, and productivityForecast capital and technology needsParticipate in contract negotiations and vendor managementSupport grant-related activities as neededEducationBachelor's degree in Health Information Management or a related field requiredExperienceMinimum two (2) years of experience in a healthcare-related fieldMinimum two (2) years of supervisory or management experience in an electronic health record environmentMedical coding experience strongly preferredExperience within a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) environment preferred but not requiredKnowledge & ExpertiseCandidates should possess:Strong knowledge of healthcare regulations and compliance requirementsUnderstanding of reimbursement methodologiesKnowledge of medical terminology and disease processesExpertise in ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS coding guidelinesUnderstanding of privacy, security, and confidentiality requirements in healthcareRequired CertificationsRHIA (Registered Health Information Administrator) or RHIT (Registered Health Information Technician)National Coding Certification through the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) or American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) required, or must be obtained within six (6) months of employmentCurrent AHA BLS (Heart Saver) certificationTechnical SkillsMicrosoft Office SuiteAdvanced Excel and data analysis capabilities preferredElectronic Health Record systemsReporting and data management softwareStrong computer and project management skillsWhat We Are Looking ForThe ideal candidate will demonstrate:Strategic leadershipStrong critical thinking and problem-solving abilitiesExceptional communication and interpersonal skillsAbility to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environmentCommitment to compliance, quality, and operational excellencePassion for supporting providers, staff, and patients through effective information managementCompensation & BenefitsBase Compensation Range: $59,800.00 - $92,456.00 annual, based on 0-22 years of relevant experience. "Relevant experience" means relevant to the employee's responsibilities set forth in the job description as determined by the HR Manager, CAO, applicable department manager/director and applicable senior leader.Starting Work Bonus: This position is eligible for a starting work bonus of up to $5,000. Eligibility, amount, and payment terms are subject to Pagosa Springs Medical Center’s compensation policies and may vary based on position, experience, and employment status. Bonus payments, if applicable, are typically issued after the employee has met required employment and service criteria.Moving Expense Reimbursement: This position is eligible for a moving expense reimbursement of up to $3,000. Reimbursement is subject to Pagosa Springs Medical Center’s relocation policy and requires prior approval. Eligible expenses and reimbursement amounts may vary based on position and individual circumstances. Reimbursement is processed in accordance with established policy and applicable tax regulations.Benefits: Benefits include generous paid time off, separate sick leave, health, dental, vision, life and AD&D insurance, long-term disability and option for short-term disability, and retirement plan with employer contribution.Job Type: Full-timeAnticipated End Date for Posting: June 30, 2026.
