Job Overview The General Litigation Division (GLD) prosecutes and defends a variety of cases, with a heavy emphasis on constitutional and civil rights litigation, employment litigation, and matters of public concern that impact the lives of Texans every day. Assistant Attorneys General IV–V independently manage a dynamic, varied docket, guiding clients to successful resolutions or taking cases to trial as first‑chair attorneys. They also serve vital roles on larger teams handling matters of great complexity and importance to the State. Job Details Location: Austin, Texas Classification: Assistant Attorney General IV (Level 28) Salary: $10,000.00 – $12,541.00 per month Employment Type: Regular Schedule: Exempt Primary Responsibilities Represent state agencies and officials in defense of lawsuits involving civil rights, retaliation, employment, constitutionality of state statutes, and the Americans with Disabilities Act in state and federal court. Represent the State’s interests in matters not handled by other civil litigation divisions, including lawsuits brought on behalf of the State to vindicate Texas’s sovereign and legal rights. Conduct investigations, perform legal research, and prepare complex motions, including pleadings, briefs, memoranda, and other legal documents. Prepare and try cases in state and federal courts in defense of state agencies and state employees. Provide legal advice, counsel, and assistance to state agencies; analyze complex factual and legal issues; develop evidence through witness interviews, depositions, and discovery; prepare and file briefs in appellate courts. Provide excellent client service and function well within a dynamic office environment. Perform related work as assigned. Maintain relevant knowledge necessary to perform essential job functions. Attend work regularly in compliance with the agreed‑upon schedule. Ensure security and confidentiality of sensitive and protected information. Comply with all agency policies and procedures, including those pertaining to ethics and integrity. Minimum Qualifications Three years of full‑time experience as a licensed attorney in civil litigation or a closely related field. Licensed as an attorney by the State of Texas and in good standing with the State Bar of Texas, eligible to practice law by the start date. Knowledge of laws and legal principles relevant to the General Litigation Division. Ability to handle multiple tasks, prioritize, and meet deadlines. Effective oral and written communication skills. Sound judgment and effective decision‑making ability. Positive response to constructive feedback. Ability to work cooperatively in a professional office environment. Ability to provide excellent customer service. Ability to work in person at the assigned OAG work location for the entire work week (unless on approved leave). Ability to arrange personal transportation for business‑related travel. Willingness to work more than 40 hours as needed and in compliance with the FLSA. Ability to lift and relocate 30 lbs. Ability to travel (including overnight travel) up to 20% of the time. Preferred Qualifications Exceptional academic credentials. Participation in a Law Review or a post‑graduation judicial clerkship. Experience at least two jury trials to a verdict in state and/or federal district court. Two years of litigation experience in civil rights, constitutional law, employment law, education law, and health care law.
