Director, New Business Development (M&A)

Position Summary

The Director, New Business Development (M&A) will play a key role in identifying and executing strategic growth opportunities for a leading global healthcare organization. This position will focus on evaluating and advancing acquisitions, licensing transactions, strategic investments, and other external growth opportunities that complement the company’s existing portfolio and support long-term business objectives.

Working closely with senior business leaders, Strategy, Corporate Development, and cross-functional teams, the Director will manage opportunities throughout the transaction lifecycle—from initial identification and assessment through due diligence, internal approval, transaction execution, and integration planning.

This role requires a combination of strategic thinking, transaction experience, financial and market analysis, and executive-level communication skills, along with the ability to evaluate opportunities in complex and rapidly evolving healthcare markets.

Key Responsibilities

• Build and manage an active pipeline of potential acquisitions, licensing opportunities, strategic investments, and partnerships.
• Identify companies, products, technologies, and capabilities that could expand the organization’s portfolio or create new avenues for growth.
• Lead the evaluation of potential transactions, including market assessment, investment thesis development, financial modeling, forecasting, scenario analysis, and risk assessment.
• Partner with Strategy and business leadership to ensure external opportunities align with broader corporate priorities and long-term growth plans.
• Conduct detailed analysis of market trends, competitive landscapes, emerging technologies, customer needs, and industry dynamics.
• Develop comprehensive business cases and recommendations for potential investments and transactions.
• Lead and coordinate cross-functional due diligence, partnering with Finance, Legal, Commercial, R&D, Regulatory, Quality, Operations, and other key stakeholders.
• Prepare executive-level presentations and clearly communicate recommendations to senior leadership and internal governance committees.
• Represent the business in initial discussions with potential acquisition targets, licensing partners, and investment opportunities.
• Partner with Corporate Development, Finance, and Legal on transaction structure, valuation, negotiations, and execution.
• Lead early-stage integration planning to ensure a smooth transition from transaction execution into the operating business.
• Support broader strategic planning and portfolio review processes related to external innovation and inorganic growth.
• Collaborate across business units and corporate functions to evaluate enterprise-wide opportunities and share best practices.
• Initially operate as an individual contributor, with the potential to take on people leadership responsibilities as the function grows.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Engineering, Life Sciences, or a related field required; MBA or advanced degree preferred.
• 10+ years of professional experience across business development, corporate strategy, M&A, finance, marketing, product development, or related functions.
• 2–3 years of management consulting experience preferred.
• Healthcare industry experience required; medical device experience strongly preferred.
• Experience evaluating or executing M&A, licensing, investment, or other strategic transactions.
• Strong analytical capabilities, including financial modeling, market sizing, forecasting, and scenario analysis.
• Ability to evaluate new technologies, products, business models, and market opportunities from both a strategic and commercial perspective.
• Proven ability to lead complex, cross-functional initiatives and influence senior stakeholders.
• Strong ability to synthesize complex information and develop clear, actionable recommendations for executive leadership.
• Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills.
• Strong business judgment and the ability to operate effectively in environments with ambiguity and incomplete information.
• Ability to travel domestically and internationally approximately 15–20%.
