Job Description

The Mechanical Assembler builds large window units and related sub-assemblies using hand and power tools, metal brackets, fasteners, and caulking products. This role focuses on precise mechanical assembly, testing, and inspection of glass, sheet metal, and steel frame components, ensuring each unit meets quality and production standards. You will work across sub-assembly and general assembly areas, learn multiple stages of the manufacturing process, and contribute to the safe and efficient completion of large-scale projects.

Responsibilities

• Assemble window units and sub-assemblies using metal brackets, fasteners, clips, and other hardware.
• Use hand and power tools, including drills and other mechanical tools, to complete assembly and fitting tasks.
• Apply caulking with caulking guns to seal windows and fill gaps, and participate in testing caulking products to verify seal integrity.
• Paint ends of materials as required and work with insulation materials such as large foam pads in designated areas.
• Wrap and net final units, ensuring proper packaging and protection before they move to the next stage.
• Inspect components and units throughout the assembly and manufacturing process to identify and correct any flaws.
• Work safely and precisely with very large pieces of glass, sheet metal, and steel frames, typically assembling units around waist height and up to 30 feet in length.
• Stand and walk for an 8-hour shift while working around large panes and assemblies in a busy manufacturing environment.
• Move between sub-assembly and general assembly areas based on workflow needs, assisting in different stages of production as required.
• Go outside into the yard when needed to retrieve materials or perform unit testing in the testing booth.
• Read and interpret blueprints and tape measures accurately to perform measurements, layout, and assembly according to specifications.
• Meet daily and overall production goals for assigned departments and assembly lines.
• Participate in cross-training across various areas of the assembly process and perform tasks in different departments, including insulation areas, as needed.
• Demonstrate flexibility by taking on tasks wherever needed and maintaining a positive, “can do” attitude.
• Receive and apply feedback constructively, maintaining strong listening skills and a professional approach to continuous improvement.
• Follow all safety procedures, including use of appropriate personal protective equipment, and contribute to a safe team-oriented work environment.
• Support quality control and inspection activities to ensure assemblies meet mechanical, dimensional, and aesthetic standards.
• Assist with troubleshooting basic assembly issues and work collaboratively to resolve problems on the line.
• Be available for mandatory overtime, including weekday and occasional Saturday shifts, when production lines require additional coverage.

Essential Skills

• Minimum 3 years of experience in a mechanical role, such as manufacturing, construction, contracting, or large-unit assembly.
• 2–3 years of experience in the mechanical field, preferably in a contractor capacity.
• 1–2 years of experience using hand and power tools and a tape measure in an assembly or similar environment.
• 1–2 years of experience reading and working from blueprints.
• Strong mechanical aptitude with hands-on experience in mechanical assembly and fitting.
• Proficiency in using hand tools and power tools, including drills and other mechanical equipment.
• Ability to read and interpret a tape measure accurately; proficiency is required.
• Experience in fabrication, fitting, installation, inspection, and troubleshooting within a mechanical or construction environment.
• Background in manufacturing or construction-related work such as deck building, contracting, or home improvement.
• Demonstrated quality control and quality assurance mindset, with attention to detail in assembly and inspection.
• Ability to work safely and confidently with large glass, sheet metal, and steel frame assemblies.
• Demonstrated flexibility in previous roles, with a proven record of taking on tasks wherever needed.
• Strong listening skills and a positive, “can do” attitude toward work and team collaboration.
• Ability to receive feedback well, supported by strong professional references.
• Capability to stand, walk, and perform repetitive assembly tasks for an 8-hour shift in a busy manufacturing environment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience in mechanical assembly, large-unit assembly, or similar industrial environments.
• Background with environments where power tools and hand tools are regularly utilized, such as construction or home improvement.
• Computer skills are a plus, with at least 6 months of experience in an assembly-type role preferred.
• Familiarity with blueprint reading and basic construction management concepts is beneficial.
• Experience with installation, inspection, and troubleshooting of mechanical components is advantageous.
• Ability to work in multiple areas, including insulation zones using large foam pads, with willingness to wear protective suits to keep dust off clothing when required.
• Comfort working both indoors and outdoors to support material handling and unit testing.
• Strong references that highlight flexibility, responsiveness to feedback, and reliability.
• Willingness to be cross-trained on various parts of the assembly process and adapt to changing production needs.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Chester, VA.

The pay range for this position is $22.00 - $22.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.

This is a fully onsite position in Chester,VA.
