Accounting Manager

Individual must be in the Charlotte, NC area and be able to work in office on a Hybrid schedule.Position Overview:The Accounting Manager is responsible for overseeing the company’s day-to-day accounting operations and ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of financial information. This role will have a strong focus on revenue recognition, accounts receivable, sales tax compliance, month-end close, financial reporting, reconciliations, and internal controls.The Accounting Manager will work closely with the CFO and cross-functional leaders to ensure accounting practices are aligned with GAAP, company policies, and applicable federal, state, and local requirements. The ideal candidate will have strong technical accounting skills, hands-on experience with revenue recognition and multi-state sales tax, and the ability to identify opportunities to improve accounting processes and systems.Experience working within a SaaS, technology, subscription-based, or other recurring-revenue business model is strongly desired.What You’ll Do: ResponsibilitiesRevenue Recognition & Accounts ReceivableOwn and oversee the company's revenue recognition processes, ensuring revenue is recorded accurately and in accordance with GAAP and applicable revenue recognition standards.Analyze customer contracts, billing arrangements, subscription agreements, and other revenue-generating transactions to determine appropriate revenue recognition treatment.Maintain and reconcile deferred revenue, unbilled revenue, accounts receivable, and other revenue-related balance sheet accounts.Ensure accurate accounting for recurring, subscription, usage-based, implementation, professional services, and other revenue streams, as applicable.Establish and maintain appropriate revenue recognition schedules and supporting documentation.Partner with Sales, Operations, and other departments to understand contract terms and ensure accounting treatment is appropriate.Identify and resolve revenue discrepancies, billing issues, and other accounting matters impacting revenue.Monitor changes in accounting standards and assess their impact on revenue recognition practices.Multi-State Sales Tax ComplianceManage and oversee multi-state sales tax compliance, including sales tax collection, reporting, remittance, and related accounting activities.Monitor state and local sales tax requirements and evaluate sales tax nexus and filing obligations.Coordinate registrations, returns, payments, exemptions, and documentation across applicable jurisdictions.Maintain accurate sales tax records and reconcile sales tax liability accounts.Research changes in state and local tax laws and determine their potential impact on the company's products, services, and operations.Work with external tax advisors and state/local tax authorities, as needed.Assist with sales tax audits and provide supporting documentation and information.Develop and maintain processes to ensure accurate and timely sales tax compliance as the company expands into new states and markets.Month-End & Year-End CloseManage and coordinate the month-end and year-end closing processes, ensuring accounting activities are completed accurately and within established deadlines.Prepare and review journal entries, reconciliations, accruals, and supporting schedules.Ensure revenue, deferred revenue, receivables, payables, and other significant accounts are properly reconciled and recorded.Identify opportunities to improve the efficiency, accuracy, and timeliness of the close process.Prepare schedules and documentation required for financial reporting and audits.Tax ComplianceCoordinate federal, state, and local tax compliance activities in partnership with the VP of Finance and external tax advisors.Ensure accurate accounting and reporting for applicable taxes, including sales and use taxes.Maintain organized and accurate tax records and supporting documentation.Assist with tax audits and requests for information from taxing authorities.Monitor relevant changes in tax laws and regulations and communicate potential impacts to the VP of Finance.Cash Management & BillingMonitor cash receipts and disbursements and assist with maintaining appropriate cash flow.Oversee the accounting and reconciliation of cash receipts, banking activity, and other cash transactions.Oversee customer billing processes and ensure invoices are accurate and issued timely.Monitor accounts receivable aging and assist with collection efforts as needed.Review and reconcile customer invoicing and payment activity.Assist with vendor payment processing and reconciliation activities.Internal Controls & AuditMaintain and strengthen internal accounting controls to safeguard company assets and ensure the reliability of financial information.Identify control weaknesses and recommend corrective actions.Ensure accounting policies and procedures are consistently followed.Support internal and external audits by preparing schedules, reconciliations, documentation, and responses to audit requests.Maintain appropriate documentation to support significant accounting judgments and transactions.Financial Analysis & Business PartnershipAnalyze revenue, expenses, margins, cash flow, and other financial metrics to identify trends and opportunities.Provide meaningful financial insights to the VP of Finance and business leaders.Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning activities.Prepare ad hoc financial reports and analyses to support business decisions.Partner with operational and commercial teams to improve financial visibility and decision-making.Process Improvement & SystemsIdentify opportunities to automate, streamline, and improve accounting processes.Develop and implement accounting procedures that improve accuracy, efficiency, and scalability.Evaluate accounting workflows and recommend improvements to systems and processes.Assist with implementation and optimization of accounting, billing, tax, and financial systems.Maintain accurate and well-documented accounting procedures.Support the continued development of scalable accounting processes as the company grows.Leadership & CollaborationProvide guidance and support to accounting team members, as applicable.Review accounting work for accuracy and completeness.Establish priorities and deadlines to ensure timely completion of accounting activities.Collaborate effectively with Finance, Sales, Operations, HR, and other departments.Serve as a subject matter resource for accounting, revenue recognition, and sales tax matters.Other duties as assigned.Education:Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or related field (CPA or CFA preferred)Experience:5+ years of progressive accounting experience, with experience managing or overseeing significant accounting functions.Strong hands-on experience with revenue recognition is required.Strong multi-state sales tax experience is required, including knowledge of sales tax nexus, registrations, filings, reconciliations, and compliance.Experience with month-end and year-end close processes and preparation of financial statements.Experience with account reconciliations, general ledger accounting, accounts receivable, and financial reporting.Experience interpreting contracts and determining appropriate accounting treatment strongly preferred.Experience working for a SaaS, technology, subscription-based, or recurring-revenue company is strongly desired.Experience working with external auditors and tax advisors preferred.Experience with accounting system implementation, automation, or process improvement preferred.Skills:Strong knowledge of GAAP and revenue recognition principles.Strong understanding of multi-state sales and use tax requirements and nexus considerations.Strong technical accounting and analytical skills.Strong understanding of financial statements and general ledger accounting.Advanced Excel skills and proficiency with accounting and financial systems.Experience with NetSuite or other ERP/accounting platforms preferred.Ability to analyze complex transactions and identify appropriate accounting treatment.Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.Excellent organizational and time-management skills.Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.Strong written and verbal
