Public Safety Dispatcher

Public Safety Dispatcher Mission: Create a safe, secure, crime‑free environment for the Trojan Family through exemplary and professional service. Overview The Public Safety Dispatcher operates from the Communications Center supporting the University Park Campus, Health Sciences Campus, and University Parking Center. The role receives calls from faculty, staff, students and guests, dispatches the appropriate department personnel via radio communications equipment, and serves as a vital link between the service community and all emergency and non‑emergency services available at the university and in the surrounding community. Responsibilities Receive emergency calls requesting police, fire, and rescue assistance. Determine appropriate response in accordance with established procedures and assessment of the situation. Dispatch Public Safety units in response to calls for service. Maintain a record of all calls and radio messages. Monitor status of public safety, parking transportation, campus cruiser, residential protection, assets protection, and other special duty units. Prepare management reports of calls. Receive calls and complaints regarding service and assistance and refer them to the appropriate unit. Operate telephone switching equipment. Request backup or follow‑up assistance from the Los Angeles Police Department, Los Angeles Fire Department, and other agencies. Operate Computer Aided Dispatch system and maintain manual and automated record systems. Conduct information searches as needed. Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent. 6‑12 months of experience in an emergency dispatch communications center, law enforcement dispatch, high‑volume call center, or related environment. Valid California driver’s license (required) and valid driver’s license for 2 years. Experience with switchboard or radio communications and working knowledge of two‑way radio communications procedures. General knowledge of campus and surrounding area geography. Ability to effectively use a phonetic alphabet, speak clearly and concisely, follow oral and written instructions, transfer information accurately, and handle a wide range of interpersonal interactions. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to type 30 net words per minute and working knowledge of computer input and retrieval functions. Capacity to make instantaneous decisions based on minimal information and to work under pressure while controlling emotions. Preferred: related undergraduate study and experience with a communications center. Shift & Availability Shifts include holidays, weekends, overtime, and special events or emergencies. Availability to work such periods is required. Salary Hourly rate: $28.31.
