Recreation Specialist I - Community Centers (Full Time) Overview: Parks, Recreation, and Tourism is seeking a motivated, outgoing individual who enjoys working with a diverse community and providing excellent customer service. The Recreation Specialist I will support programs at community centers and park facilities, oversee programming for all age groups, supervise seasonal and part-time staff, and support facility operations, rentals, and special events. Work Schedule: Monday – Sunday; shifts may include days, evenings, weekends, and occasional holidays. Work Site: Chesapeake, VA – any city recreational facility. Position Type: Full Time, 40 hrs/week. Schedule Requirements: Experience working evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed. Compensation: $45,852 annually; salary may vary based on qualifications and experience. Key Responsibilities Provide exceptional customer service to citizens, program participants, volunteers, and staff via in-person, phone, and electronic communications. Conduct facility tours and respond to inquiries. Supervise children, adults, and staff in structured programs and daily facility operations. Assist with recruitment, training, scheduling, and performance evaluations. Plan, organize, and implement recreational activities, field trips, and special events, ensuring all programs follow city policies, safety regulations, and program standards. Assist with daily facility operations – opening/closing, equipment setup and takedown, inspections, and light custodial duties. Maintain inventory of equipment, materials, and supplies; assist with purchasing and oversee distribution. Prepare reports and documentation, including incident/accident reports, statistical data, and program evaluations. Support marketing and outreach efforts through brochures, flyers, and other communications. Process monetary transactions for registrations, rentals, and events, and reconcile daily collections. Use Microsoft Office and ActiveNet Recreation Software to manage registrations, memberships, facility reservations, and reporting. Collaborate with supervisors, staff, and school officials to plan and coordinate programs and events. Required Qualifications Associate’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience in physical education or a closely related field. Minimum of one year of full‑time equivalent experience in related settings. Valid driver’s license with a driving record in compliance with city driving standards. CPR and First Aid certification within first year of employment. Ability to work independently and collaborate with staff. Knowledge of child care program certifications, licensing, permit, and compliance requirements. Knowledge of safety regulations and program standards. Preferred Qualifications Experience training, recruiting, scheduling, and managing staff in youth recreational or child‑care settings. Previous customer service experience. Experience working at parks, recreation, and tourism special events. Flexibility to work at any community center or park facility location. Physical Demands & Work Environment Routine physical tasks include lifting up to 50 lbs, frequent walking, bending, carrying, and occasional climbing. Work may involve operating equipment such as pop‑up tents, marketing displays, barricades, tables, and chairs. The job requires standing and walking the majority of the time and may involve exposure to weather conditions and noise.
