Clinical Coordinator III (RN) - Hematology & Oncology (BMT)

The Clinical Coordinator III (RN) provides patient care, education, and coordination for the Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) team within the Division of Medical Hematology/Oncology at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. The RN coordinates all aspects of the transplantation process for selected candidates and serves as a liaison between departments involved in patient care.

This role ensures adherence to clinical protocols, regulatory and certification requirements, and supports data collection and reporting activities. The Clinical Coordinator III reports directly to the Outpatient Oncology Nursing Directors and works in close collaboration with the NYP BMT & Cellular Therapy Program Manager.

Location: 161 Fort Washington Ave, NY, NY

Hours: 4, 10 hour shifts/week. Monday Friday 8:00am 6:00pm

Responsibilities

• Conduct referral intake and screening for all potential transplant candidates.
• Oversee the evaluation of candidates for stem cell transplantation and stem cell collection.
• Ensure completion of pre-transplant work-ups and maintain accurate documentation in pre-transplant records.
• Coordinate pre-transplant evaluations for both inpatient and outpatient populations.
• Review diagnostic work-up results with transplant physicians.
• Communicate evaluation status and care plans with patients, families, and referring physicians.
• Prepare and distribute correspondence to referring physicians regarding patient status.
• Collaborate with the Financial Coordinator to obtain insurance authorization for transplantation.
• Partner with the Leukemia Service Nurse Practitioner to facilitate HLA typing for patients and family members.
• Coordinate with the Myeloma and Lymphoma Service RNs to obtain clinical information on referred patients.
• Work with the Search Coordinator to identify unrelated donors, as needed.
• Support clinical care activities, including central line care, chemotherapy administration, injectable medications, and patient education on self-administration techniques.
• Participate in weekly transplant program meetings.
• Maintain regular (at least bimonthly) communication with patients to provide updates on pre-transplant progress and monitor health status; relay updates to transplant physicians.
• Provide finalized pre-transplant evaluation packets to the inpatient transplant Nurse Practitioner following physician sign-off.
• Develop and update patient education materials, including print and audiovisual resources.
• Organize and facilitate pre-transplant orientation sessions in collaboration with the Transplant Administrator, Social Worker, and Nurse Practitioner.
• Attend transplant clinics to perform patient evaluations and deliver education to transplant candidates.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent education and experience, plus four years of related clinical experience.
• Prior Blood Stem Cell Transplant (BMT) experience.
• Current New York State Registered Nurse (RN) license and Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
• Ability to adapt to a flexible schedule and a fast-paced, evolving work environment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Medical Oncology experience.
• Prior experience as a BMT Coordinator.

Other Requirements

• Medical clearance and participation in the medical surveillance program:
• Direct patient contact and/or interaction with human research subjects.
• Use of N-95 respirator as needed.
• Potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens.
• Successful completion of all required compliance and systems training.
