INTERMEDIATE TYPIST-CLERK / EMERGENCY APPOINTMENT HOMELESSNESS

JOB OVERVIEW

The Department of Mental Health is seeking qualified candidates to fill emergency Intermediate Typist Clerk vacancies related to the homelessness crisis. This position is a response to the LA County emergency for homelessness and will be filled under an emergency order. Exam Number: b2214B-EA

RESPONSIBILITIES

Type abstracts of judgments, executive notices and other documents requiring extreme accuracy. Type complex charts, forms, statistical documents from rough drafts. Process documents according to predetermined procedures for property descriptions, court filings, transcripts. Check documents for completeness, accuracy and compliance with legal requirements. Answer public inquiries about regulations, procedures, legal forms, applications, permits; serve as special receptionist or counter clerk. Keep specialized records requiring judgment in selecting and compiling data. Maintain clerical controls when work is divided among personnel. Search records and files for data requiring judgment and discrimination. Answer correspondence selecting data for replies; refer unusual cases to a superior for approval. Estimate amounts due and collect fees. Exercise minor supervision over the work of others. Compare or segregate documents requiring specialized knowledge and more than routine accuracy checks. Operate office machines such as calculators incidental to duties. Use video displays, word processors, or computers to input data.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Training and Experience: Six months of full‑time office clerical experience involving typewriting in the County service or in districts under the jurisdiction of the County, OR One year of full‑time office clerical experience involving typewriting outside the County service, OR A certificate or Associate of Arts degree in clerical procedures or office administration from an accredited college. Typewriting skill: Ability to type at the rate of 40 net words per minute.

PHYSICAL CLASS

Physical Class II – Light: administrative and clerical positions requiring light effort, occasional lifting up to 10 pounds, some bending, stooping or squatting. Considerable ambulation may be involved.

EXAMINATION CONTENT

Applicants must pass a County of Los Angeles approved typing test at a minimum of 40 words per minute.

EMPLOYMENT TYPE

Under the emergency order, successful applicants may be hired for an initial period of up to 90 days, with an opportunity for permanent County employment. Before the end of the initial work period applicants will be assessed on work performance (weighted 100%); passing the assessment will lead to permanent appointment consideration.
