Quality Control Technician

This hands-on Quality Control Technician role is based on the plant floor of a large, growing precast concrete operation. You will test and inspect concrete products to verify they meet established industry and company standards, using hand tools and testing equipment rather than working in a lab environment. In this position, you play a key role in evaluating, testing, monitoring, and documenting quality procedures to ensure all precast concrete pieces are produced as designed. The role is ideal for someone who is comfortable working in a production environment, not afraid to get their hands dirty, and eager to grow within a stable, year-round manufacturing setting.

Responsibilities

• Evaluate aggregates for moisture content and adjust mix quantities and gradation to ensure compliance with specifications.
• Conduct fresh concrete testing by sampling concrete and performing slump, temperature, air content, and unit weight tests, preparing test cylinders and accurately recording all results.
• Perform pre-pour inspections of products to verify compliance with drawings, including checking form dimensions and squareness, reinforcing steel placement, embedment plates, lifting inserts, and other critical elements.
• Carry out post-pour inspections of products to confirm they meet required standards and document findings, completing cull reports for any non-conforming products.
• Conduct and inspect strand stressing operations, recording test results and maintaining accurate material certification data.
• Perform concrete strength tests prior to releasing prestressing and at 28 days, documenting and reporting all test outcomes.
• Complete periodic inspections of headed stud welding and assembly welding to ensure quality and compliance with specifications.
• Use hand tools, testing devices, and mixing equipment to evaluate and verify product quality throughout the production process.
• Monitor and record quality control data in computer systems and maintain organized records in line with quality assurance and recordkeeping requirements.
• Read and interpret blueprints and mix designs to ensure products are produced as planned and designed.
• Participate in identifying, documenting, and executing safe work practices across all production areas, helping to ensure safety is treated with equal importance to product quality.
• Collaborate with other quality technicians and production staff as a team player to resolve quality issues and support continuous improvement.
• Follow strictly prescribed methods and processes, maintaining a high level of attention to detail in all inspections and tests.

Essential Skills

• At least 1 year of experience working with concrete or in a precast manufacturing plant.
• At least 1 year of construction experience in a related environment.
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Ability to efficiently use computers for data entry and recording test results.
• Ability to read and use a tape measure accurately.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints.
• Understanding of concrete mix designs and how they relate to product quality.
• Knowledge of concrete testing methods, tolerances, and recordkeeping requirements.
• Familiarity with Microsoft Office products and basic data input.
• Strong math aptitude for measurements, calculations, and interpreting test data.
• Detail-oriented mindset with strong process management skills and the ability to follow strictly prescribed methods.
• Ability to operate testing and mixing equipment safely and effectively.
• Demonstrated ability to work as a team player in a production environment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Precast Institute certification, preferably PCI Level I or II.
• American Concrete Institute (ACI) certification.
• Previous experience in quality control or quality assurance in a manufacturing or construction setting.
• Experience with concrete testing, inspection, and quality control procedures.
• Strong organizational skills for managing test records and quality documentation.
• Comfort working in a fast-paced, hands-on plant environment.

Work Environment

This role is based on the plant floor in a precast concrete manufacturing environment with year-round work and currently 10-hour workdays. Initial training occurs on first shift for approximately three weeks, with a flexible start time between 4:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. After training, the primary schedule runs from approximately 4:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. Occasional Saturday work is required during the summer months to meet production needs. The position is non-union, and you will primarily work in a union-affiliated main plant, with periodic support needed at a nearby non-union facility. You will be part of a team of about eight Quality Technicians and will spend most of your time in a production setting, working around concrete products such as wall panels, beams, columns, and hollow core components. The environment involves regular use of hand tools, testing equipment, and mixing machinery, as well as frequent movement around the plant floor to perform inspections and tests. Dress is appropriate for an industrial setting, with practical work attire and personal protective equipment suited to a concrete manufacturing facility.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Circle Pines, MN.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $28.00 - $30.00/hr.
