Assistant Public Defender

Description of Work Salary Range: $54,369.00 - $101,299.00 Serve as an Assistant Public Defender for District 43 covering Haywood, Jackson, Swain, Cherokee, Clay, Macon, and Graham counties. Represent clients in DWI, complex impaired driving, treatment court, and other initiatives. Maintain professional relationships with co‑workers, clients, and the public. Conduct client visits in jail and prison facilities and travel for investigative procedures. Engage in community service and outreach programs during evenings and weekends. Work primarily from offices in Haywood and Jackson counties. Qualifications Juris Doctor from an ABA accredited law school and an active North Carolina license to practice law (or pending NC Bar licensure). Knowledge of federal, state, common and constitutional law; judicial procedures; NC General Statutes; criminal and juvenile case law; legal research methods. Strong communication, legal research, writing, interviewing, and organizational skills. Ability to analyze facts and law, conduct legal research, develop litigation strategy, conduct witness examinations, present arguments, and explain complex legal concepts. Valid North Carolina driver’s license. Experience in criminal district and/or superior court trials is helpful but not required.
