Fall 2026 Democracy Legal Internship

Overview The Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law is a nonpartisan law and policy institute that seeks to improve the systems of democracy and justice in the United States. Our work spans voting rights, campaign finance reform, mass incarceration, constitutional protections, and more. Legal interns will support both the Democracy Program and the Elections & Government Program. The Democracy Program ensures fair, representative, secure, and independent elections, while the Elections & Government Program works to reform big‑money influence, strengthen ethics, alter election administration, and counter misinformation. Location This internship is in‑person at the Brennan Center’s New York office. Responsibilities Assist in legal, policy, and factual research to advance advocacy at federal, state, and local levels. Draft amicus briefs, policy reports, and other advocacy documents. Create communications to legislators and public comments to federal agencies. Attend coalition meetings, draft website posts, and provide public education. Support work on voting rights, election administration, campaign finance reform, court independence, and gerrymandering. Qualifications Excellent legal research, analysis, and writing skills. Initiative, imagination, versatility, and a passion for the Center’s issues. Law students in the Fall 2026 term. Hours and Compensation Approximately 10–15 hours per week. Pay: $20.90 per hour. Duration: September – December 2026. Application deadline: July 24, 2026. Pay is contingent on your school’s internship policy. If your school forbids paid internships, this position will not be paid.
