Lead Highway Maintenance Specialist, Traffic (TM II) - Aurora (CDL Required)

Overview Lead Highway Maintenance Specialist (TM II) located in Aurora, CO. The position is open to Colorado residents and non‑residents. Base pay typically ranges from $59,460 to $65,400 per year, with an additional $12,000 annual housing stipend, totaling $71,460–$77,400. Responsibilities Plan and schedule daily activities in the assigned work area; develop work plans for patrol employees; review work progress, identify training needs, provide feedback, on‑job training, mentoring; conduct performance appraisal input and tailgate safety talks. Ensure patrol attends required personnel training, safety classes, and informational training; perform site, night, and roadway inventory inspections. Lead and assist in maintaining roadway surface by hand patching, roto‑milling, machine patching, crack‑sealing, blading, building or restoring unpaved shoulders, stockpiling, etc. Lead and assist in maintaining roadside facilities including drainage cleaning, repair and replacement; streambed and ditch maintenance; slope repair; dirt drifts; fence, gate and sound barrier maintenance; litter‑barrel and trash cleanup; rock run; machine sweeping; and hand sweeping. Lead and assist in traffic services such as maintenance, replacement, and installation of single‑post signs, delineators, reference posts, metal guard rail, concrete rail, pavement marking or removal, roadway warning devices, energy attenuators, and courtesy assistance. Lead and assist in roadside appearance maintenance by vegetation control, hand mowing, weeding, tree trimming and removal. Lead and assist in bridge and structure maintenance and repair including visual inspection, cleaning, deck repair, crack and joint sealing (rigid and flexible decks), painting, bearing maintenance, substructure repair, approach slab and slope protection, and deck expansion device maintenance. Lead and assist in snow and ice control by snow removal, traction application, ice control, stockpiling, and snow fence installation and repair. Lead and assist in equipment, building, and grounds upkeep. Complete required paperwork and reports; use SAP for work orders, timesheet entries, and other data entry. Trim and remove trees; remove graffiti. Operate a variety of light to heavy equipment. Ensure patrol uses proper equipment and PPE. Assist other patrols as needed. Perform other duties as assigned. Work Environment Exposure to loud noise. Exposure to fumes, odors, gases, dusts that may affect breathing, eyes, and skin. Required use of appropriate personal protective equipment. Use of chemicals and cleaning products. Some equipment requires respirators. Work in close proximity to heavy traffic. Use of ladders and scissor lifts for heights 10–20 feet. Operation of heavy equipment such as backhoe, tractor, bucket truck, forklift, skid steer, loader, aerial devices. Drive CDOT vehicles. Exposure to high voltage and electrical shock. Night and weekend shifts; frequent emergency responses; overtime, weekends, holidays. Physical demands: extreme temperatures, variable weather, elevations up to 12,000 feet, long periods of activity. Use of computers; 40‑hour work week with periodic overtime. Must read, understand, and follow oral and written instructions. Minimum Qualifications At least three (3) years of experience in road/highway maintenance. Preferred Qualifications Demonstrated success with the duties listed above. Years of state service experience related to the duties of this position. Experience in scheduling and planning daily work activities for subordinates. Comprehensive knowledge of Emergency Response Guidelines, MUTCD and related regulations. Maintains a Colorado CDL Class A or B with hazardous materials and tanker endorsements. Extensive experience operating and training others on heavy equipment and hand tools. Strong safety commitment, communication skills, leadership, customer service, project management, and problem‑solving skills. Proficiency with SAP, MS Office, Gmail, and ability to learn new software quickly. Conditions of Employment Must possess and maintain a valid Commercial Driver’s License Class A or B with no air brake restrictions. If holding a non‑Colorado Commercial Driver’s License, must obtain a Colorado CDL before hire. Pass required pre‑employment screening (social security trace, criminal record, public court, educational, driving records). May need Hazardous Materials endorsement within 6–12 months. May need to pass a drug test and DOT physical. May need overtime, weekend, and holiday work. Must report promptly for essential or emergency services outside regular hours. May need to live within 30 minutes driving time of the station. Must provide an emergency contact number. Must attend one week of yearly training in Aurora.
