Highway Maintenance Specialist - NE Denver Metro (CDL Training Provided)

Background Applications will be considered from residents and non‑residents of Colorado. CDOT is hiring a Highway Maintenance Specialist in Denver, CO. The position requires obtaining a Colorado Commercial Driver’s License Class A or B and passes a drug test. Full details of the required training and licensing are described below. The role will provide a competitive base salary, housing stipend, and benefits. What You Will Do Plow snow and remove debris from roadways, culverts, and tunnels. Operate heavy equipment such as tandem dump trucks, loaders, tractors, and mowers. Maintain and repair guardrail, markers, signs, and lighting. Fill potholes, repair cracks, and install pavement markings and striping. Set out signs and cones for traffic control and stop or slow traffic during emergency situations. Maintain equipment and perform minor repairs. Follow safety guidance and wear proper personal protective equipment. Respond to calls and work on a rotating on‑call basis for weather and emergency situations. What CDOT Provides Personal protective equipment: uniforms, boots, hard hats, gloves, safety vests, respirators, and tools. Full payment for the CDL physical after your first year with CDOT. Career training opportunities. 40‑hour work weeks, with overtime in weather emergencies. 4‑day work schedule (10‑hour days Monday‑Thursday) during summer months. Opportunities to learn new equipment and advance in the agency. Your Work Environment Exposure to loud noise, fumes, dust, and chemicals. Use of ladders and scissor lifts (10–20 feet). Work near traffic, including high‑speed traffic. Drive CDOT vehicles as required. May work overtime, including weekends and holidays, and respond to emergencies outside regular hours. Physically demanding work in extreme temperatures, varying weather, and elevations up to 12,000 feet. Minimum Qualifications Must have at least two (2) years of physical labor and/or heavy equipment operation experience. Preferred Qualifications Commitment to safety and a desire to learn. Enjoy working outdoors and physically demanding tasks. Take pride in quality work and problem‑solving. Effectively communicate, especially in safety‑critical situations. Experience operating heavy equipment such as dump trucks, loaders, bulldozers, and backhoes. Experience using hand tools and basic computer skills. State service experience related to the duties of this position (if applicable). Conditions of Employment Must obtain a CDL Permit within 30 days of hire and a Commercial Driver’s License Class A or B within 120 days of hire. Must pass pre‑employment screening, including background and drug testing. Mandatory on‑call and shift work; may be required to live within 30 minutes of the workplace. New hires undergo two weeks of maintenance training; veteran employee one week each year. May need a Hazardous Materials endorsement within 6 months to 1 year.
