Heavy Equipment Mechanic III - SE Denver Metro (CDL Training Provided)

Position Overview This role is open to Colorado state residents and will be based at the equipment shop in SE Denver, Colorado. The primary responsibility is to maintain, diagnose, and repair a wide variety of heavy equipment used by CDOT. Responsibilities Diagnose and repair heavy truck and construction equipment malfunctions on all major systems. Perform overhauls and rebuild components of heavy truck and construction equipment. Use test equipment to identify defects or malfunctions. Work on equipment such as 3.5‑ton single‑axle and 10‑ton tandem‑axle tractor‑trailers, front‑end loaders, motor graders, asphalt paving machines, and 15‑ft mower tractors. Conduct preventative maintenance and annual safety inspections. Design, fabricate parts and special tools as needed. Order and procure parts and supplies. Track vehicle repairs using computer systems. Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work environment. Perform additional job duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Four years of experience in automotive and heavy equipment repair or equivalent education in automotive or diesel mechanics (transcript required). At least one year of experience diagnosing and repairing heavy diesel equipment, including 10‑ton snowplows, tractor‑trailers, bulldozers, motor graders, paving machines, or 15‑ft mower tractors. Preferred Qualifications Demonstrated success with the duties listed in the responsibilities section. State service experience related to this position. Extensive experience troubleshooting, diagnosing, and repairing automotive and heavy‑diesel vehicles up to 10 tons. Benefits Base pay between $2,478 and $2,609.54 biweekly ($64,428‑$67,848 annually). Additional $1,000 monthly housing stipend (total pay $75,480‑$80,172 annually). Medical and dental benefits after a 30‑day sign‑up period, including dependents (Cigna or Kaiser). Choice of retirement plans through Colorado PERA. 96 hours of vacation and 80 hours of sick leave earned within the first year plus 11 paid holidays. No out‑of‑pocket expenses for tools or PPE—CDOT provides all necessary equipment. Full payment for CDL physical and 50% reimbursement for CDL renewal after the first year. The majority of work will be field‑based. Conditions of Employment Must obtain a CDL Permit within 30 days of hire and a Commercial Driver’s License Class A or B within 120 days of hire, with no restrictions on air brakes. Must pass required pre‑employment screening (social security trace, criminal records, public court records, educational records, and driving records). Some on‑call and shift work may be required. Must be willing to respond to emergencies outside regular hours, including overtime, weekends, and holidays. Must be physically able to perform essential job duties. Required to attend two weeks of maintenance training in Aurora for new employees; veteran CDOT employees attend one week of training each year.
