Heavy Equipment Mechanic III - SE Denver Metro (CDL Training Provided)

About the Position Position: Heavy Equipment Mechanic (Field Mechanic) at the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), based in the SE Denver equipment shop. This role provides skilled, professional, quality mechanic services for a wide range of CDOT equipment. Base pay: $2,478 – $2,609.54 biweekly ($64,428 – $67,848 annually). Additional $1,000/month housing stipend, totaling $75,480 – $80,172 annually. Work schedule: 4‑day week 0600–1630 from May through September, 5‑day week 0800–1630 from October through April. Benefits include medical and dental coverage after a 30‑day sign‑up period (Cigna or Kaiser), retirement plans (PERA), 96 hours of vacation and 80 hours of sick leave earned within the first year, 11 paid holidays, tools supplied, PPE, CPR and first‑aid training, full payment for CDL physical, and 50% reimbursement for CDL renewal. Responsibilities Diagnose and repair heavy truck and construction equipment malfunctions on all major systems. Overhaul and rebuild components and equipment on heavy truck and construction equipment. Use test equipment to diagnose defects or malfunctions on heavy truck and construction equipment. Work on heavy truck and construction equipment such as 3.5‑ton single‑axle and 10‑ton tandem‑axle tractor‑trailers, front‑end loaders, motor graders, asphalt paving machines, and 15' mower tractors. Perform preventative maintenance and annual safety inspections. Design and fabricate parts and special tools. Order and procure parts and supplies. Use computers to track vehicle repairs. Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work environment. Perform other job duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Four years of experience in automotive and heavy equipment repair and/or education in automotive or diesel equipment mechanics (must provide transcript). At least one year of experience diagnosing and repairing heavy diesel equipment such as 10‑ton double‑axle snowplows, tractor‑trailers, bulldozers, motor graders, paving machines and/or 15' mower tractors. Must obtain a CDL Permit within 30 days of hire and a Class A or B CDL within 120 days with no air‑brake restriction. Must pass pre‑employment screening, including drug test and DOT physical. Must be able to work on‑call, shift, overtime, weekends, and holidays. Physically able to perform essential job duties and required for essential services designation. Preferred Qualifications Demonstrated success with the duties listed in the Responsibilities section. State service experience related to the duties of this position. Extensive experience troubleshooting, diagnosing, and repairing automotive and heavy‑duty diesel vehicles and equipment, including up to 10‑ton equipment.
