The CMO works in close partnership with the CEO, executive leadership team, and the Board of Directors to advance OrthoVirginia's mission of delivering best-in-class orthopedic outcomes through evidence-based, standardized care.
The ideal candidate is an orthopedic surgeon with a track record of physician leadership, clinical quality improvement, and peer engagement who thrives in a collaborative, data-driven environment.
A. Clinical Leadership & Oversight
- Provide strategic clinical oversight across all OrthoVirginia locations, ensuring consistent, high-quality, evidence-based patient care.
- Lead the development and implementation of clinical protocols, practice guidelines, and quality metrics aligned with organizational goals.
- Serve as the executive level senior physician decision maker in relation to clinical operations, patient safety, and care delivery.
- Develop, implement, and oversee the organization-wide clinical quality strategy, establishing measurable goals and key performance indicators aligned with national benchmarks and value-based care models.
- Champion the use of clinical registries, patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs), and risk-adjusted outcomes data to drive continuous quality improvement across all OrthoVirginia regions.
- Lead the design and deployment of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines and clinical pathways to reduce unwarranted variation and optimize outcomes in orthopedic care.
- Monitor, analyze, and report on quality metrics, complication rates, readmission rates, and patient satisfaction scores to the Board, executive leadership, and physician partners.
- Serve as the organizational expert on value-based care, bundled payment models, and payer quality requirements, ensuring OrthoVirginia remains competitive and aligned with evolving reimbursement paradigms.
B. Patient Safety & Risk Management
- Advance and maintain a culture of patient safety across the organization, promoting transparent reporting, culture principles, and systems-based approaches to error prevention.
- Oversee the patient safety program, including adverse event review, root cause analysis, safety reporting systems, and implementation of corrective and preventive actions.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable regulatory, accreditation, and patient safety standards, including those set by CMS, The Joint Commission, AAAHC, and state medical boards.
- Lead safety-related communication to physicians, advanced practice providers, and clinical staff, ensuring timely dissemination of safety alerts, best practices, and lessons learned.
C. Clinical Standardization & Evidence-Based Practice
- Drive clinical standardization initiatives across the organization, including surgical protocols, perioperative care pathways, implant selection and utilization management, and post-operative rehabilitation programs.
- Collaborate with subspecialty physician leaders to develop and maintain consensus-based clinical protocols that balance standardization with appropriate physician autonomy.
- Lead formulary and implant committees to evaluate clinical evidence, cost-effectiveness, and outcomes data to guide supply chain decisions without compromising patient care.
- Identify and reduce unwarranted clinical variation through data transparency, physician education, and constructive peer-to-peer engagement.
D. Peer Review & Professional Standards
- Oversee the peer review program, ensuring it operates in a fair, objective, confidential, and legally protected manner in accordance with Virginia law and organizational bylaws.
- Establish and maintain credentialing and privileging standards for all physicians and advanced practice providers, working in collaboration with HR and medical staff leadership.
- Address clinical performance concerns through progressive and supportive mechanisms, including focused professional practice evaluation (FPPE), ongoing professional practice evaluation (OPPE), and, when necessary, formal corrective action.
- Serve as the primary physician liaison with hospital medical staff leadership at partner institutions regarding quality, credentialing, and clinical performance matters.
E. Medical Education & Training Oversight
- Assist in developing and supporting graduate medical education (GME) programs, including residency and fellowship training across OrthoVirginia.
- Ensure training programs meet ACGME accreditation standards and reflect current best practices.
- Champion continuing medical education (CME) initiatives and professional development for all physicians and clinicians.
- Foster a culture of academic excellence, clinical inquiry, and lifelong learning.
F. Legal Risk and Litigation Collaboration
- Serve as a clinical liaison to OrthoVirginia's legal counsel, risk management, and compliance teams in matters involving malpractice, clinical disputes, and medicolegal exposure.
- Review and interpret complex clinical documentation in the context of active or anticipated litigation.
- Provide expert clinical perspective during case evaluation, deposition preparation, and claims resolution processes.
- Collaborate in the development of risk mitigation strategies based on litigation trends and claims data.
G. Clinical Informatics & Technology Leadership
- Guide the clinical vision for EHR optimization, digital health tools, and technology-enabled care delivery.
- Partner with IT leadership to evaluate and implement clinical decision support systems, telehealth platforms, and data analytics tools.
- Advocate for physician-friendly technology solutions that reduce documentation burden and improve clinical workflow.
- Ensure that clinical informatics strategies align with quality goals, patient safety priorities, and operational efficiency.
H. Strategic & Organizational Leadership
- Serve as a member of the executive leadership team and participate actively in strategic planning, business development, and organizational governance.
- Provide medical leadership and physician perspective on new service line development, market expansion, mergers and acquisitions, and partnership opportunities.
- Represent OrthoVirginia with external stakeholders including payers, health systems, regulatory agencies, professional societies, and community organizations.
- Partner with the CEO and COO to align clinical operations, financial performance, and quality objectives across all regions.
- Mentor and develop physician leaders throughout the organization, building a pipeline of engaged clinicians prepared to assume leadership roles.

- Represent OrthoVirginia externally with payers, hospital systems, regulatory bodies, and professional organizations.
- Provide physician leadership during organizational change, including mergers, integrations, and new service line development.
I. Collaboration with Chief Quality Officer (CQO)
- Partner with the CQO to align clinical leadership priorities with quality measurement, performance improvement, and patient safety infrastructure.
- Support the CQO in developing and monitoring organization-wide quality metrics, clinical dashboards, and outcomes reporting.
- Collaborate on joint initiatives related to accreditation readiness, value-based care strategy, and population health management.
