Recreation Coordinator

The Position

The City of San Leandro is seeking an innovative Recreation Coordinator to grow and enhance youth recreation programs for children, teens, and families. Under general supervision, plans, coordinates, schedules, assigns, supervises, and participates in the work of staff responsible for supporting the implementation of recreation programming, Citywide special events, and maintaining the safe operation of recreation facilities, sites, programs, and services; coordinates and schedules assigned facilities, services, operations, and activities with those of other City departments, contractors, community partners, and outside agencies and ensures safety and compliance with all requirements and City standards; prepares and monitors assigned recreation budgets and financial reports; provides staff assistance to management; and performs related duties as assigned.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS This class exercises independent judgment on diverse and specialized recreation programs, facility, and parks usage and event coordination with accountability and ongoing decision-making responsibilities associated with the work. Incumbents are responsible for planning, organizing, supervising, reviewing, and evaluating the work of staff and for providing technical support to higher level supervisory and management staff in a variety of areas. Performance of the work requires the use of independence, initiative, and discretion within established guidelines. This class is distinguished from the Recreation Supervisor in that the latter is the full supervisory-level class and has overall program, budgetary, and administrative responsibility for multiple recreation activities and facilities or a comprehensive recreational program.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED AND RECEIVED Exercises direct supervision over recreation leaders, specialists, facilities, and parks support staff, and volunteers. Receives general direction from assigned management and supervisory personnel.

Duties and Responsibilities

EXAMPLES OF TYPICAL JOB FUNCTIONS The typical job functions of the classification may include, but are not limited to, the functions below and are subject to changes in operational necessity.

• Plans, coordinates, schedules, assigns, supervises, and participates in the work of recreation staff responsible for recreation program implementation, facility and site operations, services, and events; coordinates the reservation and maintenance of recreation facilities, sites, equipment, and supplies; ensures recreation facilities, sites, equipment, and related services are operated safety and in compliance with established City requirements and standards.
• Trains staff in work procedures; develops and presents training materials; conducts new employee orientations; reviews employee timesheets; prepares recommendations on employee performance, counsel's employees, and effectively recommends initial disciplinary action; assists in employee selection and promotion.
• Oversees and participates in daily, general, and overall recreation programs, facilities, scheduling, usage, and related recreation operations; ensures availability, safety, maintenance, sufficient staff coverage, and adherence and compliance with City standards, safety, and service requirements.
• Plans and coordinates the implementation of Citywide special events and recreation programs; coordinates and schedules assigned facilities, services, operations, and activities with those of other City departments, contractors, vendors, community partners, and other outside agencies.
• Maintains and orders recreation facility, site, and program supplies and equipment.
• Provides program preparation and setup of recreation facilities, sites, and equipment; monitors and coordinates the maintenance and repair of assigned recreation resources.
• Interacts with recreation facility and park renters, patrons, the public, and City staff to provide customer service and information; responds to questions regarding recreation programs and activities; receives complaints and facilitates resolutions; collaborates to ensures quality customer service and effective scheduling and staffing.

Qualifications

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION GUIDELINES Any combination equivalent to experience and education that would most likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: Education : Equivalent to an associate degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in recreation, education, social services, social sciences, business or public administration, or a related field. Experience : Three (3) years of increasingly responsible experience coordinating recreation programs or community facility operations, events, resources, and programming including lead or supervisory experience.
