Community Corrections Officer 2 (or CCO1 In‑training) Location: Puyallup, WA Salary Range: CCO1: $4,603–$6,190 per month (based on qualifications). CCO2: $5,610–$7,540 per month. Minimum starting salary for CCO1 placement: Step G ($5,338/month). Responsibilities Supervise criminal individuals (S/Is) under community supervision in accordance with Washington State law, Interstate Compact Rules, and agency policy. Conduct investigations, searches, issue warrants, and make arrests when required. Complete intake and manage electronic and hard‑copy files and reports. Administer assessments of risk, needs, and substance abuse. Engage with S/Is using communication strategies such as Motivational Interviewing and Principles of Effective Interventions to facilitate positive change. Enforce supervision conditions and the law; present accurate written documentation and oral testimony in courts or hearings. Collect, document, and process evidence, ensuring proper chain of custody and storage. Exercise sound judgment and follow department policies, procedures, and protocols regarding firearms handling and safety vest usage. Document encounters and maintain required records for reporting and case management. Other duties as assigned. Minimum Required Qualifications – CCO1 Possess the ability to carry and properly utilize a department‑issued firearm. Maintain an unrestricted vehicle operator’s license valid in Washington. Willingness to work with individuals with criminal backgrounds, review graphic materials, and remain objective. Demonstrated abilities in at least three of the following areas through college‑level coursework or experience: Written communication – clear, factual, concise, grammatically correct. Critical thinking – evaluate, interpret, assess risk, make informed conclusions. Analytical reasoning – interpret data, weigh risks, identify solutions. Conflict resolution – observe and strategize interactions, communicate feedback. Situational awareness – remain calm during crises, assess volatile situations. Problem solving – identify problems, assess outcomes, implement solutions. Organizational skill – prioritize, plan, manage timeframes, detail orientation. Independent work – learn duties, comply with policy, meet productivity standards. Flexibility – incorporate new information into existing frameworks. Must have one of the following combinations of education and experience: High school diploma or GED + at least four years of qualifying experience. Associate or technical degree + two years of qualifying experience. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. Equivalent combination totaling four years. Minimum Required Qualifications – CCO2 Possess the ability to carry and properly utilize a department‑issued firearm. Maintain an unrestricted vehicle operator’s license valid in Washington. Willingness to work with individuals with criminal backgrounds, review graphic materials, and remain objective. Demonstrated abilities in at least three of the following areas through college‑level coursework or professional experience: Make field visits. Prepare written correspondence, reports, and documents. Assess cases and make recommendations. Refer to appropriate resources. Present cases in court or hearings. Complete risk factor assessments. Design, monitor, and facilitate treatment plans. Determine and make referrals to resources (chemical dependency, substance abuse, family counseling, job training, etc.). Maintain official records and track supervised individuals’ progress. Assist individuals unable to access support systems or community resources such as food, clothing, or shelter. Make sound case management decisions under stress and interpret legal documents accurately. Use computers and software to enter, retrieve, and store data. Manage caseloads with conflicting priorities. Identify community‑based resources for treatment and programming. Communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing, with program participants, agency staff, and external stakeholders. Work independently and in collaboration with stakeholders. Must have one of the following combinations of education and professional experience: One year experience as a CCO within the Washington State DOC. Associate or technical degree + three years of professional experience. Bachelor’s degree + one year of professional experience. Equivalent combination totaling five years. Special Requirements & Conditions of Employment Complete a felony disclosure form and submit to a criminal background check. Pass the psychological screening (Battery Exam and Psychological Interview/Evaluation). Submit to drug testing in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Complete mandatory training including orientation, annual, in‑service, and other required training. Familiarize with and comply with all department policies, procedures, and agreements. Complete the Firearms Academy and Control/Impedance Tactics (CIT) training within prescribed timeframes, including maintaining eligibility, qualifications, and annual requalification.
