About the Position The Assistant Coach or Associate Head Coach for Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving/Aquatics Operations Manager plays a significant leadership role in the administration and daily operation of the CMS Swimming and Diving program. The position reports to the Head Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Coach and is responsible for planning and conducting team training sessions, recruiting and evaluating prospective scholar‑athletes, coordinating team travel and operational logistics, supporting scholar‑athlete development and well‑being, managing aquatics operations, and ensuring compliance with all applicable institutional, conference, and NCAA rules and regulations. The role may supervise staff or student workers and collaborate with CMS Recreation to manage all aspects of Axelrood Pool facility operations. Responsibilities Coaching: Independently develop, implement, and oversee training plans, practice instruction, and competitive preparation for designated training groups, while contributing to the overall strategic direction and performance development of the Men’s and Women’s program. Administration and Operations: Lead and manage designated administrative and operational aspects of the program, including timely completion of documentation, coordination of team travel logistics, development of practice plans, scholar‑athlete and team culture development, aquatics operations, and collaboration with CMS Athletics staff in sports medicine, business operations, compliance, equipment, facilities, and event management. Recruitment: Play a leadership role in recruitment and retention of academically and athletically qualified student‑athletes for Claremont McKenna, Harvey Mudd, and Scripps Colleges, identifying and evaluating prospects, cultivating relationships with potential recruits and families, and guiding recruits through the admissions and enrollment process. Compliance: Comply with all NCAA Division III, CMS Athletics, and SCIAC rules and guidelines, reporting violations or concerns to the CMS Compliance Department. Aquatics Operations: Recruit, certify, oversee, and schedule lifeguards; collaborate with CMS Recreation on aquatics programming and scheduling; monitor facility and equipment operation, addressing issues with the Internal Operations and Facilities Manager and Director of Athletic Facilities. Representation: Represent the CMS Athletic Department and Swimming and Diving program positively within the SCIAC regionally and nationally. Professional Development: Maintain required training and certifications, including concussion management, mental health resources, and sexual violence prevention. Attendance: Maintain regular attendance; inability to meet attendance requirements may preclude employment. Qualifications Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience: Previous collegiate participation and coaching preferred; experience in recruiting academically focused scholar‑athletes preferred. Licenses: Valid driver’s license; national certification as a lifeguard and lifeguard instructor; certification in CPR and first aid required. Knowledge & Skills: Strong administrative, interpersonal, and computer/technology skills; proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and associated professional software. Demonstrated understanding of the role of athletics in a liberal arts college environment. Ability to use equipment to evaluate and improve departmental processes. Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication, strong interpersonal and customer service skills. Organizational: Strong organizational and time‑management skills with keen attention to detail. Commitment: Demonstrated commitment to teaching, mentoring, and inspiring students from diverse backgrounds. Legal: Ability to maintain compliance with all applicable institutional, conference, and NCAA rules and regulations. Certifications & Knowledge National lifeguarding and lifeguard instructor certification. First Aid, CPR, and AED certification or willingness to complete upon hire. Concussion management, mental health resources, and sexual violence prevention certification. Knowledge of NCAA Division III compliance and SCIAC regulations. Salary and Benefits The anticipated salary range is $66,000 – $70,000 per year, commensurate with qualifications and experience. The position is full‑time, 11‑month, exempt, and benefits‑eligible.
