Overview The Smithsonian Institution seeks an Archivist for the National Postal Museum (NPM). The position involves preserving and interpreting postal and philatelic collections and providing access to holdings for staff, researchers, and the public. Responsibilities Gain intellectual and administrative control over archival material at the National Postal Museum. Survey, reappraise, and physically consolidate archival holdings; make recommendations on space needs for storing, processing, and providing access. Implement best practices, create workflows, and provide guidance for public access to archival collections; deliver research services to staff, researchers, and the public in postal history. Manage archival collections in a database and produce finding aids. Collaborate with Curatorial and Collections to develop and implement a Collecting Plan addressing research needs and gaps. Serve as liaison to Smithsonian Libraries and Archives and Smithsonian Online Virtual Archives. Qualifications Basic Education Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in archival science or a degree with coursework including 18 semester hours in archival science, history and/or political science/government, and 12 semester hours in related subjects. Alternatively, 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education with relevant coursework. Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-09 in the Federal Service or comparable pay band, demonstrated as an Archivist in a museum-related, cultural, educational, or historical organization with processing and appraisal of collections, describing archival materials in finding aids, and making collections available to staff, researchers, and the public. Or Education: 3 full years of graduate education or a related doctorate. Education must be accredited and higher education may be substituted for experience per standard guidelines. Experience may include paid and unpaid work, including volunteer service recognized by the U.S. government. Other: Ability to meet qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date.
