Physician - Neurologist

Summary

This position is located in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) - Veterans Health Administration (VHA) - McGuire/Richmond VA Medical Center (VAMC)/ (VISN 6) Department of Neurology. The successful candidate will serve as a Neurologist and provide and maintain a high level of quality inpatient and outpatient care services in all aspects of acute and chronic neurology and movement disorders.

Qualifications

• United States Citizenship. Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
• Doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs.
• Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in any US State, Territory, Commonwealth or the District of Columbia.
• Completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
• Approved residency programs include ACGME or AOA accredited core specialties; or one year of approved first-year residency followed by two years of independent practice; or non‑US residency training followed by at least three years of verified independent practice in the United States.
• Residents in approved programs who would otherwise meet the basic requirements are eligible to be appointed as “Physician Resident Providers” on an intermittent basis under supervision.
• Physical health: must meet VA Directive and Handbook 5019 physician qualifications and be physically able to perform the duties; pre‑placement physical examination required.
• Proficiency in spoken and written English.
• Preferred experience: Completion of a movement disorder fellowship; interest or experience beyond residency in neurology; completion of additional training in movement disorders; experience or interest in movement disorder research and teaching; administrative experience managing multiple providers, workflow efficiency, budgeting and team collaboration.

Duties

• Provide neurologic evaluation and treatment for veterans on both inpatient and outpatient bases, including education and counseling of patients and families on medical conditions and treatment.
• BLS certification required.
• Maintain confidentiality of VA beneficiary information in compliance with applicable laws.
• Oversee the Neurology Consult service, including supervision of residents, medical students, and inpatient procedures; conduct teaching of housestaff and students.
• Use clinical video telehealth (CVT) and electronic consultation (eConsult) to improve access and education.
• Deliver interventions across the full spectrum of neurological care while maintaining current knowledge and skills.
• Serve as a leader and active committee member on Medical Center committees as requested.
• Participate in neurology inpatient consults, clinic, and on‑call assignments as assigned by the Supervisor.
• Manage patient care, including orders for diagnostic testing, prescribing medications, consulting with specialty services, and documentation in an electronic medical record.
• Provide outpatient care according to professional standards and core values.
• Collaborate closely with other neurologists in a team‑based model.
• Perform neurological evaluations, patient examinations, diagnosis, and consultations; engage in teaching of rotating residents, fellows, and medical students.
• Perform administrative duties such as documentation, dictation and electronic signatures of reports, and electronic entry of orders.
