Founded in 1974, Second Harvest of Silicon Valley is one of the largest food banks in the nation and a trusted nonprofit leader in ending local hunger. In one of the nation's most expensive regions, the high cost of living leaves many households struggling to afford basic necessities. Today, 1 in 6 people in Silicon Valley turns to Second Harvest for food. In addition to providing nutritious food, the organization connects people to federal nutrition programs and other resources, provides nutrition education, and advocates for policies that help end hunger. Together with the community, Second Harvest is working to create a hunger-free Silicon Valley where everyone has access to the nutritious food they need to thrive.

How They Do It

Second Harvest powers the charitable food network in Silicon Valley. Through food purchasing, large-scale food donations and a robust grocery rescue program, the organization sources, stores and distributes nutritious food across Santa Clara and San Mateo counties, working with nearly 400 community partners to help ensure neighbors have reliable access to food.

The majority of the food Second Harvest provides is fresh, nutritious produce, distributed primarily through farmer's market-style distributions led by Second Harvest and its partners. These distributions also include dairy, protein and other staple foods.

With a staff of 270 full-time employees and the support of 32,000 volunteers annually, Second Harvest is powered by deep community engagement. Nearly 95% of its funding comes from the community, including strong support from individual donors.

This is a transformational moment for Second Harvest. As the organization prepares to consolidate multiple legacy sites into a purpose-built, 215,000-square-foot Central Hub in San Jose, it is building the people, systems and infrastructure needed to meet the growing need across Silicon Valley. This $200M, LEED-certified complex opens in Spring 2027 and will expand distribution capacity by 30%, strengthen emergency response capabilities and create a more integrated, efficient operation designed to serve the community for decades to come.

The Opportunity

The Vice President, Supply Chain provides executive leadership for end-to-end food distribution operations, ensuring the safe, equitable, and cost-effective movement of food from our warehouses to community partners. This role oversees safety, warehousing, transportation, inventory planning, and customer service while advancing the organization's mission to end food insecurity.

As the senior-most leader of the supply chain function, the VP, Supply Chain is accountable for operational performance, continuous improvement, and the development of a scalable, multi-year supply chain strategy. This role leads the operations team and contributes to broader organizational priorities with increasing enterprise impact as the function evolves.

The VP owns strategic and operational leadership for all food distribution functions - warehousing, transportation, inventory and menu planning, and order fulfillment - across ambient, refrigerated, and frozen environments, including volunteer-integrated workflows and a private fleet. This includes full accountability for food safety, quality, and regulatory compliance, as well as service standards that support equitable access for agency partners and community programs.

Reporting to the COO, the VP leads the development and execution of a multi-year supply chain strategy aligned to organizational priorities and operational sustainability, including major initiatives such as systems implementations, facility transitions, and network optimization. The role carries governance and strategic direction for the organization's platforms, partnering with IT to build scalable systems and drive analytics-informed decision-making.

The VP leads, develops, and coaches a diverse team of supply chain leaders, building a strong leadership bench, and manages labor relations within a union environment. The VP owns the supply chain's operating and capital budgets, leads crisis response and continuity planning for safety and disruption events, and drives cross-functional alignment with Programs, Finance, Facilities, Development, and IT.

The VP, Supply Chain will lead a significant operational transformation, including the start-up and optimization of a sustainable, next-generation food distribution operation on one of the most modern nonprofit logistics platforms in the country. The operation will integrate advanced cold-chain infrastructure with a site energy management system that coordinates on-site solar generation, battery storage, and EV charging for both the fleet and workforce. The VP will also operationally lead the transition of Second Harvest's Class 8 fleet to battery-electric trucks and refrigerated trailers.

Naturally connects supply chain decisions to broader organizational strategy, mission impact, and financial stewardship. Balances safety, quality, cost, and service with equal fluency, and takes full ownership of outcomes rather than staying in a functional lane. Trusts and uses data to drive decisions, brings strong working knowledge of ERP, WMS, and TMS systems, and is comfortable presenting to executive leadership teams and boards.

Operationally Fluent Builder

Fluent in the mechanics of distribution - warehousing, transportation, inventory management, direct and indirect procurement, and customer service - and equally credible in the boardroom and on the warehouse floor. Energized by ambiguity and scale-up work, with a track record of building infrastructure, systems, and processes, and driving operational transformation with measurable results.

Collaborative Leader and Team Builder

Invests in growing others, building leadership benches, coaching large, diverse teams, and creating a culture of safety and accountability, including within a union environment. Builds trust easily across functions and levels, from frontline staff to the COO to donors and board members, and brings others along rather than operating in isolation.

Passion for the Mission

Carries a genuine personal commitment to ending food insecurity, informed by senior leadership experience in food distribution, nonprofit logistics, public sector operations, or other mission-driven settings. Approaches operational and financial decisions with humility and stewardship and represents the organization with integrity in front of internal and external stakeholders.

Compensation and Benefits

The salary range for this position is $225,000 - $260,000 and is commensurate with skills and experience.


This on-site role requires regular presence in warehouse and transportation environments, including refrigerated and frozen areas, and periodic travel between distribution sites, partner agencies, and community locations, with some evening and weekend work as necessary.
