Homework Central is a community-based educational nonprofit that provides after-school tutoring and family support to students in the San Mateo-Foster City School District. Five days a week, our staff and volunteers help elementary students strengthen their academic skills through 1:1 homework support, small-group tutoring, and enrichment activities.

For more than two decades, Homework Central has helped students build confidence, achieve academic success, and develop a lifelong love of learning.

Position Overview

The Site Coordinator provides leadership and facilitates the daily operations of an after-school program at an assigned school site. Reporting to the Senior Program Manager, the Site Coordinator creates a balance of academic support, enrichment activities and family engagement that help students strengthen their academic, social, and personal development.

In addition to overseeing daily site operations, the Site Coordinator provides tutoring and homework support for a classroom of up to 20 students while supervising up to two Site Assistants and up to 4 volunteer tutors per day. This position serves as the primary point of contact at the assigned site and helps ensure a safe, welcoming, and engaging environment for students, staff, volunteers, and families.

Employment Type and Compensation

Part-time, Non-Exempt

20 – 25 hours a week

$22–25 per hour based on skills and experience

Note: The working days of this position are generally aligned to the San Mateo-Foster City School District’s (SMFCSD’s) calendar, which can be found at: The SMFCSD 2026–27 calendar currently runs from August 11, 2026, through June 10, 2027. Please note the following program exception: HWC’s 2026–27 program at Baywood Elementary School runs from August 31, 2026, through May 27, 2027. Since this position is assigned to the Baywood site, your schedule will reflect these dates. Across all school sites, including Baywood, the Site Coordinator position does not include scheduled work during SMFCSD holidays, breaks, or summer recess, all of which are listed in the District’s calendar. These periods represent unpaid recess intervals during which no hours are guaranteed and no compensation will be paid.

Time Commitment

For the 2026–27 school year, August 31, 2026 – May 27, 2027 (following the San Mateo-Foster City School District calendar, adjusted for a later start date and earlier end date at Homework Central’s Baywood Program)

Program hours:

• Hours are M, Tu, Th, F: 2:30 – 6:00 pm
• Wednesday: 12:30 – 6:00 pm
• Note: The Site Coordinator is expected to stay 15 minutes after the program closes for closing duties (i.e., until 6:15 pm).
• Additional expectations include:
• Up to three hours of administrative work each week, including meetings and program planning.
• Depending on experience and organizational needs, some positions may include additional responsibilities and increased weekly hours.
• Attending at least two evening family events during the school year is required.

Essential Duties

Student Programming

• Provide homework assistance and small-group academic tutoring in reading, writing, and math.
• Plan and facilitate engaging enrichment activities that support students' academic, social, and personal growth.
• Create a positive, inclusive, and structured learning environment where students feel safe, supported, and encouraged to learn.
• Foster positive relationships with students while promoting respectful behavior and collaboration.
• Provide consistent supervision to ensure student safety throughout the program.

Site Operations

• Oversee the day-to-day operation of the assigned after-school site.
• Maintain accurate student attendance records and ensure proper sign-in and sign-out procedures are followed.
• Maintain accurate onsite documentation, including incident reports, late pick-up notices, behavior reports, and other required program records.
• Ensure tutoring progress is documented (e.g., through daily session summary forms).
• Maintain an organized, clean, and welcoming classroom environment.
• Maintain inventory of classroom supplies and recreational equipment.
• Manage classroom expenses accurately.
• Organize and distribute daily student snacks.
• Assist with classroom setup, cleanup, and smooth transitions throughout the program day.

Staff and Volunteer Leadership

• Supervise, guide, and support up to two Site Assistants and up to 4 volunteer tutors per day.
• Coordinate day-to-day volunteer engagement and ensure volunteers are prepared to support students effectively.
• Provide coaching, direction, and encouragement to maintain a high-quality tutoring environment.

School and Family Partnerships

• Build and maintain relationships.
• Keep up-to-date about student achievements and concerns.

Administrative

• Build positive relationships with school administrators, teachers, and families.
• Communicate regularly with teachers and parents regarding student participation and progress.
• Represent Homework Central professionally within the school community.
• Assist with Homework Central family engagement events and other organization-wide activities.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must meet one of the following educational requirements:

• Preferred 2-year degree with an emphasis in education or equivalent experience
• Preferred classroom management skills
• High school diploma (or equivalent) plus 48 college semester units (approximately two years of college), OR
• High school diploma (or equivalent) plus an Associate’s degree or higher, OR
• High school diploma (or equivalent) plus a passing score on the district’s Paraeducator/Paraprofessional Exam.

Additional Requirements

• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Experience working with elementary-age students.
• Ability to effectively supervise groups of students and build positive relationships with children and adults.
• Strong organizational, communication, and classroom management skills.
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
• Department of Justice fingerprint clearance.
• Negative TB clearance.
• Proof of eligibility to work in the United States.
• Ability to attend required training (or trainings) before and/or during the SMFCSD school year.
• You will be required to abide by Homework Central rules and regulations by acknowledging in writing that you have reviewed HWC’s Employee Handbook.
• You will also be required to review and abide by Homework Central’s Site Manual through written acknowledgment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Education or a related field, or equivalent youth development experience.
• Experience working in an after-school, classroom, or youth development program.
• Spanish language proficiency.
• Experience with Google Workspace (Drive, Docs, Sheets, Gmail, Meet).
• Experience developing lesson plans or enrichment activities.
• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment while demonstrating patience, professionalism, integrity, and sound judgment.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

• Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
• Ability to move around for extended periods throughout the program day.
• Ability to bend, kneel, stoop, reach, and occasionally climb as needed while supervising students.
• Ability to use a computer and standard office equipment.
• Work is performed both indoors and outdoors and may involve exposure to varying weather conditions.
• Regular exposure to moderate to loud noise levels typical of an active elementary school and after-school environment.
• May have occasional exposure to communicable illnesses commonly found in school settings.
