Controller — Goldenrod Mechanical Services (GMS) Goldenrod Companies is seeking a hands-on, strategic Controller to join Goldenrod Mechanical Services (GMS), a Goldenrod portfolio company and growing self-performing mechanical, plumbing, BAS, and services contractor headquartered in Tampa, Florida. GMS is building a scalable platform serving commercial and industrial clients across North America, with a focus on data centers, industrial, healthcare, higher education, multifamily, hospitality, and commercial projects. This is a unique opportunity to build and lead the finance function alongside a rapidly growing operation. The Role The Controller will own the accounting and financial operations of GMS, providing clear, forward-looking visibility into job performance, cash, and overall financial health. This is not simply a reporting role—the Controller will partner closely with the President, project management, estimating, and field leadership to identify risk early, improve margins, and support smart business decisions. Initially, this role will be highly hands-on, leading the close, job-cost reporting, billing, collections, forecasting, and compliance. As GMS grows, the Controller will build and lead the accounting team supporting a projected $300M+ self-performing mechanical contractor. What You'll Do Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes and executive financial reporting. Own job costing, WIP schedules, percentage-of-completion revenue recognition, cost-to-complete forecasting, and job review meetings. Partner with operations to identify job fade, margin risk, change-order exposure, and billing issues early. Oversee billing, pay applications, lien waivers, retainage, collections, cash forecasting, and working capital. Manage payroll, labor burden, multi-state compliance, taxes, insurance, bonding, and lender reporting. Establish scalable accounting policies, internal controls, KPIs, and reporting processes. Help select, implement, and optimize construction accounting and ERP systems. Recruit, develop, and lead the accounting team as the company scales. What We're Looking For Experience as a Controller, Assistant Controller, Director of Finance, or similar finance leader within a self-performing mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, or related specialty contractor. Deep construction accounting knowledge, including WIP, percentage-of-completion, job costing, labor burden, retainage, change orders, and AIA-style billing. Experience owning the full accounting cycle and monthly close in a contracting environment. Strong knowledge of surety/bonding requirements, cash management, and working-capital needs. Advanced Excel skills and experience with construction ERP systems. A hands-on, builder mindset with the ability to earn credibility with both finance and operations teams. CPA, CCIFP, multi-state accounting, fabrication/service exposure, or ERP implementation experience is a plus.
