Large Animal Surgery Supervisor (ANML CARE HOSP SUPV 1 VMTH)

Job Summary Under the direction of the Large Animal Clinic Manager(s), provide day‑to‑day supervisory and technical support to Equine Lameness & Surgery, Equine Integrative Sports Medicine, Farrier shop, and Large Animal Operating rooms (Elective & Emergent). Work closely with veterinarians to coordinate daily receiving schedules for lameness, OR, advanced imaging, and emergency cases. Assess staff training needs, deliver training, develop, manage, and update training protocols and safety documents, and evaluate staff performance. Perform administrative functions to ensure timely, accurate charge capture, inventory, and ordering of supplies for special surgeries. Monitor equipment needs, coordinate or perform maintenance and repair of medical equipment and facilities. Hire, train, and schedule career and student employees to support clinical services and the farrier shop. Qualifications Must possess a Veterinary Assistant Controlled Substance Permit (VACSP) or obtain within 3 months of hire. Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training. Experience handling, restraining, and working with horses of all types and temperaments. Experience performing sterile preparation for joint injections, laceration repairs, and other routine and emergency procedures. Experience supervising staff in a large animal hospital, veterinary specialty, or emergency service setting. Experience using specialized surgical and diagnostic equipment/instruments for large animal procedures. Experience developing, implementing, and managing technical SOPs, procedural SOPs, enforcing safety protocols, and maintaining training documentation in a veterinary hospital. Excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills to interact effectively with individuals of varying ages, cultural backgrounds, and perspectives to clarify situations, resolve problems, and make referrals in accordance with standard operating room policies and procedures. Preferred Qualifications Current California Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) license. Experience supervising in a fast‑paced dynamic environment with multiple interruptions and conflicting priorities. Experience in surgical preparation and positioning of patients for common large animal procedures and knowledge of surgical equipment. Experience using Veterinary Medical & Administrative Computer System (VMACS). Its primary objectives are to train veterinary students, graduate clinical students, and provide veterinary services to the public, serve as a referral center for practicing veterinarians, and advance veterinary medical knowledge. Compensation and Benefits Salary: $33.33 – $59.48 per hour Salary frequency: hourly, Grade 21, UC job title ANML CARE HOSP SUPV 1 VMTH, UC job code 004769, 1 position, appointment type staff: career, 100% fixed schedule Monday‑Friday with variable on‑call hours.
