Inventory Accountant

Packet Digital is seeking a highly analytical, detail-oriented, and collaborative Inventory Accountant to join our growing Finance team. This position plays a critical role in maintaining accurate inventory accounting, supporting financial reporting, and ensuring strong inventory controls throughout the organization.

Beyond inventory accounting, this role serves as a key backup for essential finance functions including payroll accounting, budgeting, and forecasting. The ideal candidate is a proactive problem solver who enjoys improving processes, driving efficiencies, and contributing to continuous improvement initiatives across the finance organization.

What You'll Do
Inventory & Cost Accounting

• Maintain accurate inventory records and ensure compliance with accounting policies and procedures.
• Perform monthly inventory reconciliations and investigate discrepancies.
• Analyze inventory transactions, reserves, adjustments, and obsolescence.
• Monitor inventory valuation and cost accounting activities for accuracy and consistency.
• Prepare and post inventory-related journal entries.
• Complete account reconciliations related to inventory balances.
• Support month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes.
• Assist with physical inventory counts and cycle count programs.
• Partner with Operations, Purchasing, and Supply Chain teams to improve inventory controls and data accuracy.
• Support internal and external audit requests by providing inventory-related documentation.

Financial Reporting & Analysis

• Prepare financial reports and analyses related to inventory, costs, gross margins, and operational performance.
• Investigate and explain financial variances.
• Support management reporting with accurate and timely financial information.
• Perform ad hoc analyses and participate in special projects.

Payroll Accounting Support

• Serve as a backup for payroll accounting functions.
• Prepare payroll-related journal entries and reconciliations as needed.
• Support payroll accruals, employee benefits accounting, and payroll reporting activities.
• Assist with payroll audits and compliance requirements.
• Maintain documentation to ensure continuity of critical payroll processes.

Budgeting & Forecasting

• Assist with annual budgeting and periodic forecasting activities.
• Prepare budget-to-actual and forecast-to-actual analyses.
• Collaborate with department leaders to gather and validate financial information.
• Support financial planning and management reporting initiatives.
• Help improve forecasting accuracy and reporting effectiveness.

Process Improvement & Operational Excellence

• Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, accuracy, and scalability across accounting and finance operations.
• Evaluate existing workflows and recommend automation opportunities.
• Strengthen internal controls and standardize accounting procedures.
• Support ERP enhancements and technology initiatives.
• Develop and maintain process documentation, training resources, and cross-training materials.
• Participate in continuous improvement projects that drive productivity and operational excellence.
• Contribute to a collaborative, team-oriented culture by sharing knowledge and best practices.

What We're Looking For
Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
• 10+ years of accounting experience.
• Strong knowledge of GAAP and accounting principles.
• Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
• Experience working with ERP systems.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational abilities.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with payroll accounting and reconciliations.
• Experience supporting budgeting and forecasting processes.
• Experience with financial reporting and business intelligence tools.
