The Opportunity

As a dedicated SIEM & Security Data Staff Engineer, you will provide technical leadership for the organization's security logging, telemetry, and SIEM strategy, ensuring high-quality data is available to support monitoring, detection, and response activities. Partners with application owners, infrastructure teams, and security engineers to onboard new data sources, optimize data pipelines, and improve data quality, normalization, and parsing. Drives the evolution of security telemetry capabilities to enable advanced analytics, automation, threat hunting, and future-state security operations.

We offer a flexible work environment that requires an individual to be in the office 4 days per week. This position can be based in one of the following locations: San Antonio, TX, Plano, TX, Phoenix, AZ, or Colorado Springs, CO. Relocation assistance is not available for this position.

What you'll do:

• Serves as a system engineer/solution architect, anticipates operational inefficiencies and potential security risks, and drives solutions architecture for large complex systems or networks, with a focus on managing vulnerabilities and reducing risk of system and/or asset compromises.
• Leads the design of scalable security solutions across multiple domains and portfolios including the creation and enforcement of implementation patterns and alignment with technical architecture.
• Drives solutions architecture for large complex information security solutions, with a focus on delivering on requirements, anticipating operational inefficiencies, and preventing potential security risks.
• Executes complex implementations serving as subject matter expert across multiple domains; Influencing service delivery and tooling efficacy at the portfolio level.
• Serves as a trusted advisor and leads cross-functional, matrixed delivery teams across a variety of technical domains to solve highly complex and high value Security related engineering problems and decrease the time to market of critical engineering decisions that impact the overall security posture and health of USAA.
• Analyzes trends, news and changes in threat and compliance environment with respect to organizational risk.
• Interfaces with auditors, external regulators and external suppliers (3rd/4th parties) to represent USAA in discussions regarding their specific security technical domains.
• Collaborates with and influences senior level executive leaders and architects on the most appropriate and feasible approach for managing security engineering-based risk and compliance issues.
• Owns security engineering decisions across USAA including identifying, planning, and applying advanced security solution concepts and principles.
• Builds prototypes and proofs of concept to demonstrate feasibility for new, emerging and innovative security technologies, and influences enterprise prioritization for implementation.
• Anticipates and translates business, security, engineering objectives into achievable controls, including developing and overseeing the technical implementation of those controls.
• Ensures risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled in accordance with risk and compliance policies and procedures.

What you have:

• Bachelor's degree; OR 4 years of relevant education and/or experience.
• 8 years' of related experience in Security Engineering and/or Information Technology in a large organization, major consulting firm, or US military.
• Expert level security consulting skills in delivering modern security infrastructure solutions new applications of technology and Information Technology business models in support of emerging workforce needs.
• Advanced knowledge of emerging and/or evolution of existing security technologies.
• Mastery of complex system and environment analysis, design, optimization, and hardening. Subject matter expert knowledge of Information Security and/or Cybersecurity theories, techniques and/or technologies.
• Exceptional relationship management building skills which include the ability to effectively collaborate, communicate and develop high trust relationships across all levels of an organization, to include senior level executive leaders.
• Extensive experience explaining and influencing complex technology decisions to both technical and nontechnical audiences at all levels in the organization and with cross functional and enterprise teams.

What sets you apart:

• Deep expertise in SIEM platforms (e.g., Splunk, Microsoft Sentinel, Google SecOps, Elastic, QRadar) or leveraging a Datalake (Snowflake, Databricks) for security logging, with experience designing and optimizing large-scale security monitoring and analytics environments.
• Strong background in security telemetry engineering, including log collection, normalization, enrichment, parsing, and data quality management across cloud, on-premises, application, identity, and endpoint data sources.
• Experience building and maintaining scalable data pipelines using technologies such as Kafka, Cribl, Kinesis, Event Hubs, Data Lake architectures, cloud-native services, or similar high-volume data processing platforms.
• Advanced knowledge of security operations, threat detection engineering, threat hunting, incident response, and MITRE ATT&CK, with the ability to translate security use cases into actionable telemetry and detection requirements.
• Proficiency in scripting, automation, and data analysis using languages such as Python, PowerShell, SQL, or similar technologies to improve telemetry onboarding, validation, and operational efficiency.
• Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional engineering initiatives, influence technical strategy, and partner with application, infrastructure, cloud, and security teams to drive enterprise-wide security data and observability capabilities.

Compensation range: The salary range for this position is: $164,780.00 - $314,960.00 .

Compensation: USAA has an effective process for assessing market data and establishing ranges to ensure we remain competitive. You are paid within the salary range based on your experience and market data of the position. The actual salary for this role may vary by location.

Employees may be eligible for pay incentives based on overall corporate and individual performance and at the discretion of the USAA Board of Directors.
