Department Description
The Department of Oncological Sciences is a multi-disciplinary department working to reveal the genetic, epigenetic, biochemical, cellular, and physiological underpinnings of cancer. Situated within the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, we are committed to discoveries which improve the understanding, diagnosis and treatment of cancer. The department is also training the next generation of cancer scientists with the skills they need to continue this critical work.
The department is comprised of scientific leaders in multiple areas of cancer research including themes that encompass: cell signaling pathways, oncogenes and tumor-suppressor genes, cell cycle regulation,metabolism, tumor invasion and metastasis, regulation of protein stability, tumor microenvironment (including immune cells, angiogenesis, and lymphangiogenesis), cancer immunology and immunotherapy, and novel cancer therapeutics and resistance mechanisms. The department is closely aligned with the Tisch Cancer Center at Mount Sinai, which is an NIH-designed comprehensive cancer center and ranked #6 in the nation for cancer care.
Through our research efforts, the Department of Oncological Sciences works to minimize the impact of cancer and advance patient outcomes within and beyond the Mount Sinai Health System.

General Summary:
The Chair of the Oncological Sciences (the “Department”) shall have overall administrative responsibility for the Department, and reports to the Dean of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (the “School”). The Chair will lead and direct the educational and research functions of the Department as defined by the Department’s mission statement and consistent with the policies and procedures of the School and the Mount Sinai Health System.
The Chair will be expected to advance the vision and mission of the Department of Oncological Sciences and the Mount Sinai Tisch Cancer Center. The Chair will foster effective, collegial, cooperative, and productive relationships among faculty, pre- and post-docs, and staff within the Department. The Chair will actively supervise departmental faculty, and recruit new faculty as needed. The Chair will oversee the department budget to support Mount Sinai in maintaining financial discipline and providing a positive contribution to the institution’s overall financial results. The Chair will collaborate with the institutional leadership teams as well as the heads of other departments and programs at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
Research:
- Lead and further build the Department’s research enterprise, including grants management,research compliance, and the oversight of core facilities.
- Encourage faculty participation, leadership opportunities, and grant acquisition in research endeavors.
- Further develop and enhance a high quality, accountable, and equitable network of mentorship for investigators and trainees.
- Ensure compliance with all governmental and pharmaceutical regulations and appropriate and timely submissions to the Grants and Contracts Office (GCO) and Institutional Review Board (IRB).
- Generate high impact factor publications in your area of expertise.
- Develop independent grant support from the NIH, private foundations, and other sources.
- Ensure that our faculty maintain robust portfolios of federal and non-federal funding.
- Ensure that the quality and appropriateness of all research performed in the Department are monitored and evaluated and that appropriate action based on findings is taken when necessary.
- Education:
- Ensure high-quality settings for the recruitment, education and training of students, staff,postdoctoral fellows, and faculty.
- Foster an academic environment conducive to the advancement of faculty through appropriate support, mentoring and faculty development programs.
- Participate in teaching activities to medical and graduate students as well as postdoctoral fellows.
- Administrative:
- Provide fiscal oversight to ensure a financially sound Department; oversee the development,implementation, and monitoring of financial plans that reflect strategic initiatives and operational priorities of the Department that are consistent with institutional policies and goals.
- Collaborate with other Department Chairs and research Institute Directors to facilitate inter-departmental cooperation and coordination of educational programs and research.
- Participate in the development of policies related to the functioning of all staff in the Department and the administration of various departments/services across the Health System.
- Oversee the professional conduct of the faculty within the Department across the Health System.
- Recommends faculty appointments and other employment arrangements as appropriate for individuals with primary responsibility in the Department of Oncological Sciences.
- Oversee appointments and promotions for all recruitments and existing faculty within the Department.
Education:
- Ensure high-quality settings for the recruitment, education and training of students, staff,postdoctoral fellows, and faculty.

- Ensure that space and facilities needed for the Department to carry out its mission are adequate and appropriate.
- Recommends to the administration and staff in the Department the type and amount of equipment necessary, assuring through at least annual review, that such equipment is available.
- Maintain relationships and provide academic leadership as required with the leaders of the Icahn School of Medicine.
- Maintain excellence in information technology infrastructure and connectivity.
- Oversee compliance both internally and externally regarding all contractual agreements relating to the faculty and staff associated with the Department.
- Participate in professional societies such as the National Academy of Sciences, the National
- Academy of Medicine, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences
- Ensure that our faculty can hire new laboratory personnel, and provide oversight for all personnel-related issues in the department.
- Ensure that the department operates within the school-approved annual budget and achieves balanced budget each fiscal year.
Philanthropy:
- Work closely with the Health System’s and School of Medicine’s Development Office to ensure robust philanthropic support for the Department’s research and educational programs.
- Actively participating in and encouraging faculty to engage in fundraising activities with the Development officer assigned to the department.
Salary range: $300,000 - $450,000
