Scope Of Responsibilities

Speech-Language Pathologists are communication specialists who work with speech and language impairments.

Performance Responsibilities

1. Serves as a resource to school staff members in the development of a balanced program for oral communication and speech improvement.
2. Assists and guides teachers in observing, describing, and referring suspected and identified speech and language impairments.
3. Provides a thorough assessment and diagnosis of speech, voice, and language impairments.
4. Provides screening to identify children with speech and language disabilities at regular intervals and at specified levels.
5. Assists in proper referrals of individuals to agencies and specialists in the community.
6. Provides appropriate services to meet individual students' needs and correct existing speech or language handicaps.
7. Collaborates with classroom teachers and other school staff members to implement therapy by suggesting the student's daily activities.
8. Provides information and support to parents and families. Maintains Individual Educational Plans for all students assigned to caseloads, meeting timelines.
9. Provides progress reports on goals and objectives.
10. Maintains all student records, evaluations, and IEPs.

Minimum Qualifications

1. An earned master's degree in speech and language pathology.
2. A valid Michigan certificate with speech and language impaired (SB) endorsement or a master's degree and the Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).
3. Minimum three years of successful experience working with children and families in an urban educational setting and/or diverse/multi-cultural setting.
