Laboratory Technician - Science (Temporary)

Position Summary Under general supervision, performs specialized and technical duties in the operation and maintenance of science instructional laboratories and stockrooms, including hazardous material storage, cleanup, and disposal. Responsibilities include preparing, receiving, stocking, and issuing laboratory supplies, coordinating budget requisitions and expenditures for supplies and equipment, and training and directing student help. Typical Duties Generate purchase orders for supplies, materials, and equipment needed for laboratories. Prepare instructional materials and equipment for instructor demonstrations. Organize and facilitate the collection, cleanup, and disposal of biohazardous or toxic chemical waste, interface with hazardous waste disposal vendors, and adhere to state and local health and safety regulations. Maintain the stockroom and laboratory in a safe, clean, and orderly condition, including functional checks on safety equipment such as eyewash stations, showers, fire extinguishers, and fume hoods. Ensure availability of supplies, materials, and equipment needed for laboratories and provide training for instructors and new technicians in stockroom operation. Prepare and issue materials and equipment for student use; clean, sterilize, perform minor repairs, adjust, and maintain laboratory and stockroom equipment. Train and provide direction to student help; operate a variety of equipment related to the science lab and stockroom; manage supplies, materials, and equipment; communicate test and analysis results; prepare and maintain records and reports related to laboratory operations. Control expenditures within the assigned budget allocation and provide data for and prepare budget estimates. Operate a motor vehicle as needed; collaborate with science faculty, instructional assistants, and other laboratory technicians to design and develop experiments and demonstrations; perform related duties as required. Scientific Areas Biology : Prepare and maintain microbial cultures and media; prepare solutions; handle living organisms; operate autoclaves; clean lab and stockroom glassware and equipment; use dissecting tools. Chemistry : Prepare materials for instructors, including solutions, solids, unknowns, and demonstration items; prepare standard volumetric solutions; test and analyze chemical and physical properties; maintain a chemical library; manage lockers and breakage records. Physics : Prepare equipment and materials for instructors; assemble items for demonstration and lab use; repair equipment using basic electronics skills; calculate data; maintain sensors and probes; may work with nuclear materials. Minimum Qualifications One year of responsible and successful work experience in a science laboratory or stockroom, or equivalent training. Completion of two years of college education (19 semester units) in Biology, Chemistry, and/or Physics. Additional experience or education may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required experience or education.
