Job Title: Construction Materials Technician Job Description

The Construction Materials Technician plays a key role in providing construction inspection services and quality control for a wide range of civil infrastructure projects. This role focuses on field and laboratory testing and inspection for roadway and bridge work, as well as water and wastewater, aviation, commercial, and municipal utility and infrastructure projects. You will learn and apply construction inspection practices, develop creative problem-solving skills, and collaborate closely with public agencies and project teams to help ensure that construction work meets specifications and industry standards.

• Perform construction engineering technician inspection services related to earthwork, concrete, asphalt, and utility construction for state transportation agencies, municipalities, and private sector projects.
• Conduct engineering and construction field testing primarily on roadway and bridge projects, observing and reporting on specific aspects of work in progress such as concrete pours, rebar placement, and pipe replacements.
• Collect and sample construction materials, including soils, concrete, asphalt, and aggregates, in accordance with applicable standards and project requirements.
• Perform basic computations using formulas and accurately plot data, drawing simple curves and graphs to support project documentation and analysis.
• Assist engineers in the field during soil and materials investigations, supporting data collection and documentation activities.
• Ensure that job site tests and observations, including quality control, quality assurance, and verification activities, are performed in accordance with standard test and observation methods, project specifications, and other contract documents.
• Perform laboratory testing and observation of soils, concrete, and asphalt to verify material properties and compliance with specifications.
• Perform field inspections for construction projects to ensure contractor compliance with state specifications, plans, and proposals, primarily for roadway and pavement work.
• Verify plan quantities and calculations against bid plans to support accurate project measurement and documentation.
• Prepare and maintain clear, accurate project records and reports, including test results, inspection logs, and daily documentation.
• Assist with notifying the contractor or project engineer of non-conforming work when required, helping to ensure timely resolution of quality issues.

• At least 2 years of experience in construction on civil-related projects such as roads, bridges, utilities, airports, or similar infrastructure.
• ACI concrete field testing certification, or the ability to obtain ACI certification within 30 days of hire.
• Hands-on experience or strong aptitude for construction materials testing, including concrete testing and compaction testing.
• Ability to work with and around nuclear density gauges and similar testing equipment in a safe and responsible manner.
• Strong written communication skills for preparing reports and maintaining project records.
• Strong verbal communication skills for interacting with engineers, contractors, and public agency representatives.
• Ability to work effectively outdoors in varying and sometimes difficult weather conditions.
• Willingness to complete and successfully pass required drug screening and background checks.
• Ability to perform basic mathematical computations, apply formulas, and interpret plotted data and simple graphs.
• Attention to detail and commitment to following standard test methods, project specifications, and contract documents.

• Previous experience working for a construction materials testing or inspection company is a plus.
• Experience with concrete, asphalt, earthwork, and utility construction engineering services and inspection or testing is beneficial but not required.
• Experience with field and laboratory testing of soil, concrete, asphalt, aggregate, masonry, structural steel, and fireproofing is an advantage but not required.
• Preferred certifications, though not required, include DOT Asphalt Technician, NICET Level II Soils, ICC Special Inspections, and CWI/NDT inspector credentials.
• Familiarity with construction inspection practices on roadway, bridge, and utility projects.
• Ability to collaborate with engineers, contractors, and public agencies in a professional and solution-oriented manner.

This position is primarily field-based and involves working on active construction sites across roadway, bridge, utility, and related civil infrastructure projects. You will work in all types of weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and varying terrain, and can expect to work approximately 50 to 60 hours per week depending on project needs. The role involves regular use of field testing equipment such as nuclear density gauges and concrete testing tools, as well as laboratory equipment for soil, concrete, and asphalt testing. The environment is fast-paced and safety-focused, with an emphasis on quality control, accurate documentation, and collaboration with project teams. The pay range for this position is $43000.00 - $52000.00/yr.
