Certified Peer Support Specialist

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Certified Peer Support Specialist (CPS) provides recovery-focused peer support services to individuals with mental health conditions, substance use disorders (SUD), or co-occurring disorders.

Job Type: Full Time

Starting Pay: $25.00

Work Location: Houston

RESPONSIBILITIES

· Provide peer support services to individuals using lived experience with mental health and/or substance use recovery.

· Participate in and support Person-Centered Recovery Planning (PCRP) activities, including preparation before and participation during PCRP meetings.

· Assist individuals in identifying recovery goals and developing recovery action plans.

· Promote development of coping skills to manage symptoms of serious mental illness (SMI) and substance use disorders (SUD).

· Assist in conflict resolution and relationship-building between participants, Recovery Managers (RM), and other service providers.

· Provide guidance and support related to barriers affecting recovery.

· Support individuals in building alternative social networks and strengthening natural supports.

· Assist participants in setting recovery goals aligned with their Individual Recovery Plan (IRP).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

· Ability to climb stairs multiple times a day and be able to lift and/or carry up to 25 pounds.

· Ability to sit, rise, kneel, squat, twist, pull bend multiple times a day.

· Ability to walk with items in hand, grasp and reach as needed.

· Ability to perform with repetitive maneuvers and manual dexterity.

· Ability to work in an office environment.

QUALIFICATIONS

· High School Diploma or GED.

· Maintain an HHSC approved certification for mental health or SUD peer specialists

· At least one (1) year of peer support experience preferred.

· Ability to work independently and be self-motivated.

· Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively work with individuals and groups.

· Ability to flex work hours as needed.

· Willing to work some weekends and overnight shift.

· Possess strong interpersonal leadership, analytic, and problem-solving skills.

· HHSC approved criminal background clearances.

· Valid driver’s license.

· CPR/First Aid/BLS certification

· PPD Clearance
