Med/Surg RN Job Requirements

• Active Registered Nurse license in Illinois or confirmation that the application process has been initiated
• At least 1 year of recent acute-care or general medical-surgical nursing experience
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association
• Ability to care for approximately 1:5–6 patients on night shift
• Strong patient assessment, organization, communication, and teamwork skills
• Positive attitude, dependability, and commitment to safe, compassionate patient care
• Willingness to float to other general medical units as needed; occasional supportive assignments in other departments may be requested
• Ability to meet applicable drug-screening and health-screening requirements

Medical-Surgical Nursing Responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive nursing care to adult medical-surgical and nephrology patients during 12-hour night shifts
• Care for patients with end-stage renal disease, acute kidney injury, hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis needs, kidney and pancreas transplant procedures, transplant rejection, urologic conditions, and general medical diagnoses
• Monitor patients following procedures such as parathyroidectomy, prostatectomy, prostatectomy, kidney stone treatment, graft or fistula repair, and transplant biopsy
• Complete assessments, administer medications, coordinate treatments, and evaluate patient responses to care
• Perform bedside rounding and provide clear, accurate handoff reports
• Collaborate with providers, patient care technicians, respiratory therapists, and other members of the interdisciplinary care team
• Recognize changes in patient condition and promptly communicate concerns or rhythm alerts to the appropriate clinical team
• Use safe patient-handling practices and unit equipment, including overhead lifts available in patient rooms
• Document nursing care accurately in the electronic health record
