Geotechnical Engineer Job Description

Geotechnical engineers work to make sure that foundations for built objects ranging from streets and buildings to runways and dams, are solid. They focus on how structures built by civil engineers, such as buildings and tunnels, interact with the earth (including soil and rock). In addition, they design and plan for slopes, retaining walls, and tunnels.

Our company is looking for a Geotechnical Engineer to join our team.

Responsibilities:

  • Proposes approach to solve new problems encountered;
  • Gathers and correlates basic engineering data using established and well-defined procedures;
  • Performs specific and limited portions of a broader assignment of an experienced engineer;
  • Identifies discrepancies in results;
  • Conducts quality assurance and quality control on own projects;
  • Engages in the development of a design through sketches, electronic models, diagrams, and other visual formats;
  • Assist in the development of new standards and specifications for the discipline;
  • Prepares contract documents for construction (i.e. engineering drawings and specifications);
  • Serves as Engineer-of-Record;
  • Displays applications of sound professional judgment on details of work;
  • May provide technical direction to drafters, technicians, and surveyors;
  • Develop geotechnical engineering recommendations and write geotechnical engineering reports, commensurate with experience level;
  • Forensic investigations and litigation support; and;
  • Work as a team member within the home office and across other Schnabel offices to effectively balance workload among available resources;
  • May perform field work related to geotechnical explorations and/or construction related activities.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s or higher in Civil Engineering;
  • Proficient with slope stability and settlement analysis;
  • 2+ years of experience with Geotechinical Engineering , testing, inspection and design;
  • Excellent leadership skills;
  • EIT certification;
  • Ability to perform field work and travel as needed;
  • Ability to pass a background check which may include criminal history, motor vehicle record and credit check;
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET – accredited program;
  • AutoCAD and GIS skills suitable for developing geotechnical deliverables;
  • Ability to multi-task;
  • Ability to thrive in a collaborative team environment;
  • Ability to pass pre-employment drug screening;
  • Experience with Microsoft Teams and SharePoint software;
  • U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Resident status (no visa sponsorship provided);
  • Professional Engineering license in Virginia, or ability to obtain within 6 months.
