Accountant III Job Description

Accountant III maintains financial records and ensures that financial transactions are properly recorded. Ensures the accuracy of entries to ledger accounts and reconciles subsidiary ledger accounts to the general ledger. Being an Accountant III prepares complex balance sheets, profit and loss statements and other financial reports. Analyzes current costs, revenues, financial commitments, and obligations incurred to predict future revenues and expenses. Additionally, Accountant III may supervise and guide lower-level accountants. Requires a bachelor’s degree. May require CPA certification. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Accountant III contributes to moderately complex aspects of a project. Work is generally independent and collaborative in nature. To be an Accountant III typically requires 4 to 7 years of related experience.

Responsibilities:

  • Analyzes general ledger accounts for accuracy; analyzes accrual accounts to ensure proper accruals;
  • Participates in monthly financial meetings for discussion and review of monthly financial reports;
  • Assists with the maintenance and application of internal controls;
  • Assists other departments with compiling information and reporting results and outages;
  • Prepares and ensures accuracy and integrity of accounting and transactional records to ensure proper financial reporting;
  • Works with external audit firm to support timely completion of audits or compliance reporting;
  • Trains new staff and mentors less experienced staff;
  • Processes and maintains assigned ad hoc or recurring journal entries in a timely and accurate manner;
  • Independently reviews revenue and expense accounts for accuracy; determines proper accruals;
  • Develops and maintains financial databases with servicing and / or collateral information;
  • Prepares financial management reports;
  • Assists in monthly preparations of financial statements, including an understanding of new accounts or issues;
  • Identify improvements in business processes or procedures, while working with related departments, to aid in minimizing outstanding reconciling items;
  • Assist the Accounting Manager on other department related tasks as necessary;
  • Prepare monthly account reconciliations; research and resolved identified discrepancies in a timely manner.
