CORRECTIONS OFFICER (open recruitment) • $28.37/hour - $34.74/hour • Hazardous Duty Pay of $60 biweekly (not included in the salary above)
This position is offered with a Trainee Status at a pay rate of $25.17 per hour. The State of New Hampshire, Department of Corrections, Northern New Hampshire Correctional Facility has multiple vacancies for Corrections Officers located in Berlin, NH.
To perform work as a Corrections Officer in accordance with established rules, regulations, post orders, and specific instructions; receives general administrative direction. To maintain professional and personal integrity, ethics, and a positive community standing in and outside the work environment; establishes a correctional environment supportive of rehabilitative activities and access to healthcare services reflective of reducing the risks of recidivism. Each additional year of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work experience and/or each additional year of approved work experience may be substituted for one year of required formal education.
Education/Experience: High school diploma or high school equivalency credential. Six months of experience as a Corrections Officer or its equivalent in law enforcement, police work, or the military. Ability to use firearms and to demonstrate proficiency by passing weapons qualifications on an annual basis.
Selected candidates will be required to participate and complete training at the Corrections Academy; must obtain certification as a Corrections Officer during the probationary period.
After conditional offers of appointment, must pass a comprehensive medical examination provided at the state’s expense.
Trainee Option: Candidates with an equivalent combination of a high school diploma and no previous experience may be considered and hired in “trainee status.”
Applicants must successfully participate and meet the criteria as outlined in the state administrative rule Pol 300 - Police Standards and Training Council for Corrections Officers.
Satisfactory completion of Examinations Requirements and Certifications of a Corrections Officer.
Six months of experience as a Corrections Officer or its equivalent in law enforcement, police work, or the military.
Satisfactory job performance during the evaluation period.
The work of a trainee is overseen by a fully qualified individual and must meet minimum qualifications within the period specified, not to exceed one year.
Maintain security in buildings, towers, and other posts; Supervise housing units during work, recreational, and religious activities; conduct health and safety inspections; utilize non-lethal or lethal force when justified within policy; Perform first-responder rescue and medical aid; Operate technology and devices (radios, computers, control panels, firearms); protect confidential records.
Maintain ongoing training as required by DOC and NH law enforcement standards.
Act as ex officio constable with police powers within the correctional facility when applicable.
