Primary Purpose of the Position

The Academic Counselor will provide consistent advisement for all pre‑nursing and nursing students and veterans. The employee will collaborate with the Director of Student Support Services and Senior Advisor to plan, coordinate, and evaluate Student Support Services, including recruitment, pre‑admission tracking and advising, admissions, orientation, registration, financial aid, graduation, and student information systems. The role assists with the formation and maintenance of policies related to student admissions and advisement.

Minimum Education / Experience

Master’s degree required. Two years of relevant work experience preferred.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties

Interview and counsel students regarding admission procedures and academic requirements for the nursing degree program, taking notes and providing feedback to the admissions committee.

Meet with students to provide information about the nursing programs offered, answering questions they may have.

Coordinate and refer students to support services and programs within the department and university, including tutoring, financial aid and planning, career options, mentoring, and programs for students with limited English proficiency.

Identify diverse student needs, review and maintain individualized action plans, and assess progress to determine further actions.

Develop and deliver presentations to classes, student organizations, and employers; provide career information, planning programs, and career‑development activities; promote career programs such as career fairs, on‑campus interviewing programs, and job search.

Implement proactive strategies for veterans and at‑risk students, and apply advising best practices to help nursing students overcome educational barriers.
